Stats
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | Two-Hand Sword |
| Speed | ~3.6 (slow — ideal for Fury) |
| Proc | Insanity: large AP bonus for 10 sec |
| Source | C'Thun — Ahn'Qiraj Temple (AQ40) |
The Insanity proc grants a powerful temporary attack power buff. Combined with Battle Shout, Blessing of Might, and Windfury Totem, the window becomes devastating burst damage.
C'Thun — Final AQ40 Boss
C'Thun is AQ40 final boss and among the hardest in classic WoW:
- Phase 1 (Eye): Eye Beam kills anyone in line of sight. Players position behind tentacles.
- Phase 2 (Body): players are swallowed and must fight their way out.
- Composition: 40 disciplined players, 4–6 tanks, high DPS for phase 2.
Most private servers including WowX5 use a nerfed version, but the encounter is still challenging.
Why Dark Edge Is BiS for Fury
- Slow speed (~3.6): maximizes damage per hit on Whirlwind.
- Proc in key moments: Insanity amplifies Heroic Strike and Whirlwind.
- Vs Ashkandi: Dark Edge has AP proc; Ashkandi has better static stats. Fury benefits more from proc.
Enhancement Shaman
Enhancement Shamans use Dark Edge as BiS two-hander. The Insanity proc synergizes with Windfury Totem: high AP plus extra hits equals massive burst.
Tips for WowX5
1. Guild progression: Dark Edge requires full AQ40 clearance. See AQ40 raid guide. 2. Reserve early: Fury Warriors compete heavily for this weapon. 3. Also target: Crul'shorukh — another top AQ40 weapon.
Register on WowX5 and aim for AQ40.
Context in WoW Classic
Dark Edge of Insanity remains a symbol of raiding achievement in WoW Classic. Obtaining it meant killing C'Thun — a task that in the original game was accomplished by only a handful of world-class guilds (C'Thun was initially declared bugged and unkillable).
Insanity proc in detail: the attack power buff from the proc lasts 10 seconds and has an internal cooldown. With good RNG, a Fury Warrior can receive multiple procs per fight, creating windows of explosive damage. These are the moments to use Recklessness or Death Wish for maximum effect.
Comparison with Atiesh (legendary): Dark Edge of Insanity remains BiS for melee DPS through the entire AQ40 phase. Even the legendary Atiesh from Naxxramas does not compete with Dark Edge for Fury Warrior — they are different weapon types. Dark Edge only becomes obsolete with top Naxxramas weapons.

FAQ
Where does Dark Edge of Insanity drop?
Dark Edge of Insanity drops from C'Thun, the final boss of Ahn'Qiraj Temple (AQ40). Drop chance is approximately 10–15%. Reaching C'Thun requires clearing all of AQ40.
Who needs Dark Edge of Insanity?
Primarily Fury Warriors (two-hander) and Enhancement Shamans. The Insanity proc temporarily grants a large attack power bonus — one of the best melee procs in all of Classic.
Is Dark Edge better than Ashkandi?
Both are BiS-level for two-hand warriors but serve different specs. Ashkandi (BWL) is better for Arms and Protection for stat balance. Dark Edge (AQ40) is better for Fury due to the AP proc and speed.
