# Crowd Control in WoW Classic: CC Types, Mechanics and Use

Crowd control (CC) is the set of abilities that temporarily remove a target from the fight: fear, polymorph, stun, root, sleep and blind. Smart CC turns a dangerous pull into a manageable chain and decides duels in PvP. Below is the hub for every control type on the WoW Classic X5 server (x5 rates, patch 1.12.1).

Five effect categories

  • Incapacitate — target is "asleep" and cannot act: Polymorph, Hibernate, Blind, Sap, Gouge. Breaks on any damage.
  • Stun — full loss of control, but damage does NOT end it: Kidney Shot, Cheap Shot, Hammer of Justice, Bash, Concussion Blow, War Stomp.
  • Fear — target runs on its own: Warlock Fear, Priest Psychic Scream, Warrior Intimidating Shout. Damage gives a chance to break early.
  • Root/Snare — immobilize: Frost Nova, Entangling Roots, Frost Shock. Casting still works; damage may break the root.
  • Banish/special — Banish (demon/elemental becomes invulnerable), Shackle Undead (undead only), Hunter's Freezing Trap.

Key CC rules

1. Type vulnerability. Polymorph — only beasts and humanoids; Sap and Shackle — humanoids/undead; Banish — demons and elementals; Hibernate — beasts and dragonkin. Check the target type first. 2. Break on damage. Never hit a sheeped or slept target — even a single DoT removes the control. Mark CC targets with raid icons beforehand. 3. PvP diminishing returns. A repeated CC of the same category on a player lasts half, then a quarter, then grants immunity. See the diminishing returns guide. 4. Counters. Tremor Totem and Fear Ward remove fear; Berserker Rage and the PvP trinket (Insignia) clear control. Account for them on the enemy.

Control is part of overall combat mechanics and directly affects threat: a broken CC means an extra mob on the healer. For PvP by class see the PvP guides and the honor system.

FAQ

Does crowd control work on bosses?

No. Raid bosses and most elites are immune to stun, fear, polymorph and sleep. CC is used on normal mobs, adds and against players in PvP.

What should I learn about CC first?

Three things: which effects break on damage (polymorph, sleep, blind), which have PvP diminishing returns (stun, fear, root), and which creature type each affects (undead/demon/beast).

Does CC behave the same on an x5 server?

Yes. x5 rates speed up leveling, but patch 1.12.1 CC mechanics are unchanged: durations, damage breaks and diminishing returns work as in the original.
