Polymorph in WoW Classic: Mechanics, Target Types and Tactics

How polymorph works

• Target types. Only beasts and humanoids. Undead, demons, elementals and mechanicals are immune. Players of all races are humanoids and can be sheeped.
• Healing. While transformed the target restores health. This makes sheep ideal for resetting a fight but forbids storing damage on it.
• Break on damage. Any damage — including a DoT tick, an AoE splash or a Multi-Shot bounce — instantly breaks polymorph. Never touch the sheep.
• Duration. In PvE the top rank lasts up to 50 seconds. In PvP it is shorter due to diminishing returns and breaks.

Tactics

In dungeons and raids

1. Assign the sheep a raid mark (usually ★ Star) before the pull. 2. Cast polymorph from max range, away from AoE. 3. Tell the group not to hit the marked target. Re-sheep periodically — recast a couple of seconds before it ends. 4. If the sheep breaks and runs — Frost Nova roots it and buys time to re-polymorph.

Mana saving (downranking)

For simple holding a low rank polymorph is enough: duration is identical across ranks while mana cost is lower. Keep rank 1 on your bar for CC and save the high rank.

In PvP

• Sheep is a distance reset: transform, run off, drink mana, start over.
• Against healers polymorph interrupts healing and resets their burst.
• Mind DR: a second polymorph is shorter, so alternate it with Frost Nova or an ally's Frost Trap.

Common mistakes

• AoE near the sheep — Blizzard, Consecration, Rain of Fire break control. Keep the sheep to the side.
• A DoT on the target — if Corruption is already on the future sheep, polymorph drops on the first tick.
• A pet on auto-attack — a hunter/warlock pet will break the sheep. Call the pet back.

FAQ

What cannot be polymorphed?

Undead, mechanical, elemental and demon targets are immune to polymorph. It only works on beasts and humanoids. Players of any race can be sheeped (they are humanoids).

Why does the sheep heal?

Polymorph deliberately restores the target's health while transformed. This is handy for resetting a fight and regaining mana, but it means you cannot store damage on the sheep — any hit both breaks control and wastes the healed HP.

How long does polymorph last?

In PvE the highest rank holds the target for up to 50 seconds. In PvP, diminishing returns and break-on-damage make the real duration much shorter, so sheep is used to create distance, not for long control.
