Protection Paladin — Build, Talents and AoE Tank
Protection Paladin is an unusual vanilla tank. Unlike the warrior, the paladin has no taunt, so it will not main-tank a raid on single targets. Instead it is the king of AoE threat and invaluable for dungeon farm groups, as an off-tank and a mana battery. On WowX5 x5 the prot paladin quickly gathers packs and holds them with Consecration and Holy Shield.
The paladin's main threat source is AoE: turn on Righteous Fury (+90% Holy threat), keep Consecration rolling, and maintain Holy Shield and Retribution Aura. The Reckoning talent stores auto-attack charges — after a big hit you unleash a flurry and a threat spike.

What this build is for
Prot paladin is built to hold packs:
- AoE farm — holds a dozen mobs with Consecration, ideal in a mage+paladin duo.
- Off-tank — soaks adds and secondary targets in raids.
- Dungeons — a reliable tank on pack pulls, dispels magic and resurrects.
It rarely main-tanks bosses in vanilla — no taunt and no steady single-target threat.
Talent layout
Deep Protection with a splash into Retribution/Holy:
| Tree | Points | Key talents |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | ~31 | Holy Shield, Blessing of Sanctuary, Improved Righteous Fury, Toughness, Redoubt |
| Retribution | ~15 | Reckoning, Improved Retribution Aura |
| Holy | 0–5 | Stun resistance |
Holy Shield and Righteous Fury are the threat foundation; Reckoning gives a spike after long pauses.
Rotation and threat
On the pull turn on Righteous Fury and Retribution Aura, run into the pack and drop Consecration under your feet. Keep Holy Shield for blocks and damage, refresh Consecration, and pick up stragglers with Judgement and Hammer of Wrath on execute.
For farm duos ball the mobs up and "bake" them with Consecration while the mage AoEs. Useful macros are in the paladin macros guide.
Stats and gear
Tank priority: survivability (armor, stamina, defense to the cap) → healing power/threat → intellect for mana. Consecration and Holy Shield scale with healing power, so some +heal raises threat.
Threat mechanics are in the threat guide, starter sets in pre-raid BiS paladin. The tree overview is in paladin talent builds.
