# WoW Classic Threat Mechanics: 110% / 130%

Threat is the invisible counter that decides who a mob looks at. The tank must hold the most threat while DPS 'burn' below it without pulling ahead. Understanding thresholds and modifiers turns a chaotic raid into a controlled one.

Threshold
Threshold110% melee / 130% ranged
Defensive Stance
Defensive Stance+30% threat for the tank
Sunder
SunderCheap steady threat

Pull thresholds: 110% and 130%

A mob holds its current target until someone's threat exceeds the threshold:

  • 110% of the tank's threat — if the character is in melee range (5 yards).
  • 130% of the tank's threat — if the character is attacking from range (outside melee).

Hence the rule: melee DPS stay below 110% of the tank's threat, while ranged DPS and healers have a small buffer up to 130%. The switch happens the moment the threshold is passed — the mob turns to the new target.

Stance and buff modifiers

SourceThreat effect
Defensive Stance (warrior)×1.3 (+30%) — tanking baseline
Battle/Berserker Stance×0.8 (−20%) for warrior DPS
Blessing of Salvation−30% threat (on DPS, not the tank)
Tranquil Air Totem−20% threat to the group
Feint (rogue)one-off partial threat drop

Threat from damage, healing and spells

  • Damage generates threat roughly 1:1 (×1.3 in Defensive Stance).
  • Healing gives 0.5 threat per amount and is split among all mobs in combat — which is why a healer can pull a whole pack, not one mob.
  • Some spells and buffs generate threat with no damage (paladin auras, shields, shaman shocks).
  • Special abilities carry extra threat: for warriors that's Sunder Armor, Heroic Strike, Revenge, Shield Slam — cheap, steady threat (see rotations).

Threat drops by class

  • Rogue — Feint (partial), Vanish (full drop).
  • Hunter — Feign Death (full self-drop).
  • Mage — Invisibility; warlock — Soulshatter (−threat to all).
  • Paladin — Blessing of Salvation on DPS (−30%).

In practice on x5

The tank opens and banks 3–5 seconds of threat before DPS burst. Healers wait a couple of tank hits before landing big heals. Run KTM/Omen — the threat meter shows who is near the threshold. For steady threat the tank needs 440 defense (survival) and a shield for Shield Slam/Revenge.

FAQ

When does a mob switch from the tank to DPS?

When a target's threat exceeds the tank's by 110% (if within melee range) or 130% (if attacking from range). That's why ranged DPS and healers can bank slightly more threat before pulling.

How much threat does healing generate?

Healing generates 0.5 threat per amount healed, split among all mobs in combat. So healers shouldn't over-heal early before the tank has built threat.

How do you drop threat?

Rogue — Feint (partial) and Vanish (full), hunter — Feign Death, mage — Invisibility, warlock — Soulshatter, paladin — Blessing of Salvation (−30% threat) on DPS. The warrior's Defensive Stance gives +30% threat.
