Shadow is the reverse of the Light, and turning to it is dangerous for mortals: it corrupts anyone who wields it carelessly.
Void and corruption
The origins of shadow reach back to the Old Gods — monstrous void entities whose whispers sow madness. Dark energy also flows from the Twisting Nether, the home of demons. The necromancy with which the Scourge raises the dead is likewise a branch of shadow magic. Shadow is treacherous because it rarely kills at once: it erodes its victim from within, poisoning the body with disease and corruption and the mind with fear and doubt. Its wielder gains great power but pays for it with a piece of their own soul, and many dark mages end by becoming monsters themselves.
Wielders of shadow magic
The classic masters of shadow are warlocks: their Shadow Bolt, Corruption and curses drain the foe. The dark path is also open to priests: donning Shadowform, a priest unleashes Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay. Shadow is a school of damage over time and domination of the mind.
Shadow in the world of Vanilla
Shadow magic pervades the darkest corners of Azeroth: the necropolises of the Scourge, the lairs of the cultists of the Old Gods and the creatures they spawn. Many undead foes and casters strike with the shadow school, so shadow resistance is valued against them.
