The Old Gods: Void Parasites in the Depths of Azeroth
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruThe Old Gods are the oldest and most alien threat to Azeroth. They are parasitic entities of the Void, bringers of madness, chaos and corruption. It is they, not the demons, who lie at the root of many of the world's calamities — from the War of the Shifting Sands to the corruption of dragons.
Arrival from the Void
In ages past, before the coming of the titans, the Old Gods invaded a young Azeroth. They sank roots into the very heart of the planet and bound it to their will, turning the world into a living nightmare. Their whisper drove all life to madness.
War with the titans
When the titans arrived to order Azeroth, they went to war with the Old Gods. Victory came at a terrible cost: to kill a god was to kill the world itself, so deeply had they grown into the planet. So the titans did not destroy them but imprisoned them in underground vaults.
| Old God | Prison | Status in Vanilla |
|---|---|---|
| C'Thun | Ahn'Qiraj, Silithus | AQ40 raid boss |
| Yogg-Saron | Northrend (Ulduar) | Beyond Vanilla |
| N'Zoth | The ocean depths | Beyond Vanilla |
The curse of flesh and legacy
The Old Gods' influence twisted the titans' creations: their stone servants became creatures of flesh — thus arose the curse of flesh that gave rise to the ancestors of the dwarves and gnomes. The Old Gods' corruption also touched the black dragonflight through the madness of Neltharion.
Even an imprisoned Old God is never idle: its whisper corrupts mortals over years, spawning cults such as the Twilight's Hammer.
C'Thun in Vanilla
The climax of the Old Gods theme in classic is C'Thun. Awakening beneath Silithus, he reaches for the surface while the Twilight's Hammer aids him. To stop the god, the Cenarion Circle and its heroes storm the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj — one of Vanilla's peak raids.
