The Third War was the greatest catastrophe before the events of WoW Classic. The Burning Legion returned, but this time its vanguard was the Scourge — an unstoppable army of undeath. It was this war that created the shattered world in which the game begins.

The plague of undeath and the fall of a prince
Unable to win by force, the Legion struck by cunning. The Lich King — the enslaved spirit of the shaman Ner'zhul in the Frozen Throne — unleashed a plague of undeath upon Lordaeron that turned the living into zombies. He was served by the Cult of the Damned led by the lich Kel'Thuzad. Crown Prince Arthas Menethil, desperately trying to save his people, carried out the culling of Stratholme, then took up the cursed runeblade Frostmourne — and fell, becoming a death knight of the Lich King.
The fall of Lordaeron
Arthas returned home and killed his own father, King Terenas, delivering the kingdom to the Scourge. He raised Kel'Thuzad to open a portal for the demon Archimonde. The Legion destroyed the magical city of Dalaran. Thus Lordaeron fell, and its lands became the Plaguelands.

The war's finale unfolded at the World Tree Nordrassil on Mount Hyjal. While the armies of the Horde and humans held back the Scourge, Archimonde pushed toward the tree to devour its power and become godlike. At Nordrassil itself he was met by the wisps summoned by Malfurion: thousands of ancient souls detonated, immolating the demon. Archimonde fell and the invasion collapsed.
