The Scourge is an army of the walking dead raised by the will of the Lich King. It was the Scourge that turned flourishing Lordaeron into the Plaguelands and gave rise to the Forsaken. For a Vanilla player it is the great foe of the map's northeast.
Birth of the Lich King
Fearing the orcish corruption was unreliable, the Burning Legion forged a new weapon. The spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul was sealed in a block of ice — the Frozen Throne — on the continent of Northrend. Thus was born the Lich King, whose mind could raise the dead and enslave the living from afar.
The plague of undeath
The Scourge's weapon was the plague of undeath. Spread through tainted grain distributed by the Cult of the Damned, it turned whole villages into obedient undead.
The fall of Arthas
The climax was the tragedy of Prince Arthas Menethil. Consumed by a desire to save his people, he went too far: he took up the cursed runeblade Frostmourne, culled the infected Stratholme, and finally became a death knight himself, slaying his own father. So Lordaeron fell.
The Scourge in Vanilla
In the Vanilla era the active Scourge is entrenched in the east:
- Naxxramas — Kel'Thuzad's flying necropolis above the Plaguelands, the pinnacle of raid content.
- Stratholme and Scholomance — strongholds of undead and abominations.
- The Plaguelands — here the Argent Dawn wages an endless war against the Scourge.
