Sargeras and the fall of a titan
The Legion was created by Sargeras — once the noblest of the titans, a defender of worlds. Confronted by the undying evil of the Void and the cunning of the Old Gods, he fell into despair and became convinced the universe could not be saved — only purged by fire. So was born the Burning Crusade.
Army of the Twisting Nether
Sargeras freed the very demons he had once imprisoned and forged them into the Legion. Its ranks refill endlessly from the Twisting Nether — a slain demon is merely unmade and reborn there anew.

Corruption and the orcish invasion
Unable to storm Azeroth outright, the Legion worked through proxies. The demon Kil'jaeden found on Draenor the ambitious warlock Gul'dan and through him corrupted the orc clans. Drinking the blood of Mannoroth, the orcs fell under a demonic curse and poured into Azeroth in the First War.
Corruption leaves no clean escape: even the Horde freed by Thrall carries its mark for ages.
Legacy in Azeroth
Though the Legion's full invasion comes later, in the Vanilla era its shadow lies over everything: demons serve warlocks, lurk in the Blasted Lands, and cults such as the Twilight's Hammer weave demon-worship together with reverence for the Old Gods. The defeat of the Third War only delayed new invasions.
