Who was Gul'dan

Gul'dan was the first warlock of the orcs, apprentice of Kil'jaeden and betrayer of his own people. It was he who made the clans drink the blood of Mannoroth, damning the orcs to demonic slavery, and who opened the path for the Burning Legion into Azeroth.

Death and legacy

Searching for the Tomb of Sargeras and the power hidden within, Gul'dan perished, torn apart by demons. But his skull soaked up monstrous energy and became an artifact. For long years it remained a dangerous relic that grants its bearer unthinkable might — and demonic corruption.

Absorbed by Illidan

Illidan Stormrage found the skull and, against all warnings, absorbed its power. In that moment he was changed forever: he gained horns, hooves and the form of a half-man, half-demon. In return he received immense might and the ability to sense the Legion's greatest artifacts, including the Eye of Sargeras.

The price of power

The skull's gift made Illidan an outcast. Neither the Alliance nor his own people accepted his new form, and Illidan went his own way — forever balanced between hero and villain. The Skull of Gul'dan became a symbol of how the hunger for power disfigures even the great.

Place in Vanilla lore

In the age of WoW Classic the Skull of Gul'dan is part of the backstory that explains the bond between orcs, demons and the Burning Legion. Players who study the lore better understand where the corruption in the blood of the Horde came from, and why Illidan became what he is.
