Savory Deviate Delight: Recipe, Deviate Fish and the Pirate Costume
Savory Deviate Delight is the most famous novelty dish of WoW Classic cooking: eat it and your character turns into a pirate or a ninja for a whole hour. On the WoW x5 server running patch 1.12.1 both the recipe and the fish come from the Barrens, and the finished dish does not bind, so it can be traded freely. Below you will find the effect, the recipe, the reagents and the link to Wailing Caverns.

◆What it is and what it does
The dish belongs to the Cooking profession and requires 85 skill, which makes it one of the few low-level recipes that even level 60 characters care about. The 1.12.1 item tooltip is short: item level 18, "Use: Eat me.", a 10 second cooldown and stacks of 20. There is no character level requirement, so it suits a twink and a fully raid-geared hero alike.
After eating, one of two random effects is applied:
- Flip Out — the form of a human ninja in black clothes and a mask, lasting 1 hour;
- Yaaarrrr — the form of a human pirate in a tricorne hat, also lasting 1 hour.

In early patches the dish had several other effects, but patch 1.7 removed them, so in 1.12.1 only the two transformations remain. The form is purely cosmetic: your stats, abilities and gear work as usual. Characters of other races use some human emotes while the effect is active.
How to get the recipe and cook the dish
- Raise Cooking to 85. Trainers can be found in every capital city; the leveling order is covered in the cooking guide.
- Obtain Recipe: Savory Deviate Delight. Vendors do not sell it. According to the 1.12 database it drops with a fraction-of-a-percent chance from more than a hundred kinds of creatures in the Barrens of roughly level 10–30: centaurs, quilboars, harpies, kodos and other savannah beasts. The recipe does not bind, so it also appears on the Auction House.
- Fish up Deviate Fish. They are part of the catch in the three Barrens oases, The Forgotten Pools, Lushwater Oasis and The Stagnant Oasis, and in the waters of Wailing Caverns. Roughly every third catch there is the fish you need. Poles and lures are covered in the fishing guide.
- Buy Mild Spices from any cooking supplies vendor.
- Cook the dish at a fire — it takes 3 seconds and yields one Savory Deviate Delight.

◆The Wailing Caverns connection
The fish is named after the twisted deviate creatures of Wailing Caverns, a dungeon whose entrance lies in the Barrens southwest of the Crossroads. Deviate Fish can be caught both in the inner waters of the dungeon and near its entrance. Alchemists use it too: Deviate Fish, Earthroot and an Empty Vial make the Elixir of Giant Growth, which increases your size and Strength by 8 for 2 minutes. The raw fish can also be eaten and has its own random effects with the debuff text "You feel funny." More about the dungeon itself is in the Wailing Caverns guide.
◆Who needs it and how to use it
- Role-players and screenshot lovers — the pirate and the ninja remain the most recognizable costumes of the era.
- Guilds — costume meetups, joke tournaments and holiday photos.
- Traders — the recipe is rare and the fish only lives in the Barrens, so finished dishes are in demand on the Auction House.
- Gifts — the dish does not bind and can be mailed to an alt or a friend.
Savory Deviate Delight gives no Well Fed bonus; raid food with stats is covered in Well Fed food buffs, and the full recipe overview lives in the cooking recipes hub.
Tips
Druids and shamans lose the transformation when they change form: take the form you need first, then eat the dish.
- The result is random, you cannot choose between the pirate and the ninja.
- Fish in the oases, not only at the dungeon entrance: there are fewer competitors and mobs there.
- Keep a stack in your bags — the cooldown is only 10 seconds and the dish fits any holiday.
