An ancient key
A thousand years ago, in the War of the Shifting Sands, the combined forces of the night elves and the bronze dragons sealed the horde of Ahn'Qiraj behind mighty gates. The key to them was the Scepter, entrusted to the dragon Nozdormu. But in the hour of danger the Scepter was shattered, and its shards scattered.
The legendary chain
In WoW Classic, reforging the Scepter of the Shifting Sands is one of the hardest and most honored tasks. The player follows a long quest chain in Silithus: gathering the scepter's shards, raising reputation with the Cenarion Circle and the Zandalar tribe, obtaining rare resources, and taking part in rituals at the Gates.
Opening Ahn'Qiraj
On completing the chain, the hero receives the Scepter and the right to strike the Scarab Gong at the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj. This launches a server-wide event: the Gates open, and a horde of qiraji pours from the sands. The ten-hour War of the Shifting Sands begins, in which the whole server takes part.
The hero's reward
Whoever opens the Gates first enters the server's history and receives a unique mount — the Black Qiraji Battle Tank, available only to those who struck the gong in the first hours of the event. It is one of the most prestigious rewards in all of Vanilla.

The Scepter of the Shifting Sands links the ancient War of the Shifting Sands to the events of WoW Classic. Behind the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj slumbers C'Thun — one of the Old Gods — and opening the Gates means the start of a new war against the spawn of the Void.
