Seaforium Charges: Engineering Explosives for Locked Doors

Section: Lore & bestiary 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 26.10.2026

Seaforium charges are engineering explosives that blast open locked dungeon doors without a key and without a rogue. In WoW Classic 1.12.1 on the WoW x5 server there are three of them: Small, Large and the Powerful Seaforium Charge. The key thing to know up front: in Vanilla the charges work only on doors, they cannot open lockboxes or chests.

The three Seaforium charges in 1.12.1

Data comes from our game server database. Blast power is the highest level of a blasting-type lock the charge can open. Charges stack to 10 and are consumed on use.

Small Seaforium Charge1001502 Coarse Blasting Powder, Copper Modulator, Light Leather, Refreshing Spring Water

Engineers craft the powders and parts themselves; the leveling order is in our engineering guide, and all plans are in the engineering schematics reference.

Lockboxes and chests: why a charge will not work

Many guides claim a Seaforium charge opens a Mithril or Thorium Lockbox. For Vanilla this is wrong. In 1.12.1 the item text literally says Blasts open simple locked doors and Blasts open difficult locked doors, and in Lock.dbc on our server all nine lockboxes have only a lockpicking lock with no blasting option. Charges learned to open chests and lockboxes in patch 2.1.0, during The Burning Crusade.

So for lockbox contents an engineer needs a rogue or a blacksmith; see the Lockbox reference for WoW Classic and blacksmithing skeleton keys. What you can find under lock in the world is covered in locked chests.

The most common use on x5 is Blackrock Depths, where without the Shadowforge Key you cannot reach the Lyceum, and northern Dire Maul when the group has no Crescent Key. The Searing Gorge gates cannot be blasted in 1.12.1: they only have a lockpicking lock.

Where to get the schematics

  • Schematic: Small Seaforium Charge is a random drop: according to our server database it drops at a very low rate from many low-level humanoids and appears in some chests.
  • Schematic: Large Seaforium Charge is also a world drop via shared loot tables.
  • Schematic: Powerful Seaforium Charge is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt, the engineering supplies vendor in Everlook; base price 1 gold 60 silver, limited supply. The route is in our Everlook guide.

The Seaforium Booster is not a charge

The database also contains the Seaforium Booster. It is a quest item from Razzeric's chain in the Shimmering Flats, Thousand Needles: the quests Razzeric's Tweaking and Safety First ask you to retrieve the booster, take it to Shreev in Gadgetzan and bring back the modified version. It cannot be crafted and does not blast doors.

FAQ

Can a Seaforium charge open a lockbox or chest in 1.12.1?

No. In WoW Classic 1.12.1 the charges only blast locked doors, as the item text states. The ability to open chests and lockboxes was added in patch 2.1.0, after Vanilla. For lockboxes you need rogue lockpicking or blacksmith skeleton keys.

Where do I get the Powerful Seaforium Charge schematic?

From Xizzer Fizzbolt, the engineering supplies vendor in Everlook, Winterspring. The schematic is sold in limited supply and requires Engineering 275.

Can a non-engineer blow open a door?

No. Each charge requires Engineering 100, 200 or 275. You can sell the charges, but only an engineer with the required skill can use them.

What is the Seaforium Booster?

A quest item from Razzeric in the Shimmering Flats, Thousand Needles: you retrieve it, take it to Shreev in Gadgetzan and bring back the modified version. It cannot be crafted and does not open doors.
