Spider's Silk, Thick Spider's Silk, Shadow Silk and Ironweb Silk
Spider silk is a separate class of tailoring materials that should not be confused with cloth: you cannot turn it into bolts or donate it for reputation, yet many blue and epic items cannot be made without it. On the WoW x5 server in Vanilla 1.12.1 there are four tiers of silk, and each drops only from spiders of a certain level range. Below are the item names, the best sources from our server database and the recipes that use them.
Contents
◆The four types of spider silk in 1.12.1
Every silk type is a common (white) item with no binding, stacks to 10 and is never sold by vendors. You get it only from spider loot or the auction house. For the full picture of cloth, bolts and threads see the hub tailoring materials.
| Material | Item level | Vendor sell price | Source spiders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider's Silk | 20 | 3s 87c | level 17–36 |
| Thick Spider's Silk | 35 | 7s 50c | level 32–60 |
| Shadow Silk | 40 | 10s | level 35–60 |
| Ironweb Spider Silk | 50 | 25s | level 45–61, bosses |
◆Where to farm silk: best spiders in the server database
The chances below come from our server loot tables and are rounded. Farming routes by zone are covered in detail in the guide where to farm cloth, and the general bestiary is on the page spiders of Azeroth.
Spider's Silk (item level 20)
- Plains Creeper (level 32–33) in the Arathi Highlands — about 19%, the most plentiful source.
- Moss Creepers in the Hillsbrad Foothills and Alterac Mountains — 12–15%.
- Wildthorn spiders in Ashenvale and Deepmoss spiders in the Stonetalon Mountains — 9–14%.
- Black Widow Hatchlings, Green Recluses and Venom Web Spiders in Duskwood — 8–12%.
Thick Spider's Silk and Shadow Silk
These two materials drop from the same spiders, so they are farmed together.
- Witherbark Broodguard in Shadra'Alor, The Hinterlands — 21% thick silk and 12% shadow silk.
- Glassweb and lava spiders of the Searing Gorge — about 22–23% thick silk and up to 12% shadow silk.
- Sorrow Spinner and Deathstrike Tarantula in the Swamp of Sorrows — 17–20% thick silk.
- Darkfang spiders and Darkmist Cavern spiders in Dustwallow Marsh — 6–10% of each type.
- Crypt fiends of the Eastern Plaguelands (Terrorweb Tunnel) — about 25% thick silk and 18% shadow silk.

Ironweb Spider Silk
- Mother Smolderweb — about 50% and Crystal Fang — about 47% in Lower Blackrock Spire.
- Sand Skitterers and Rock Stalkers in Silithus — about 13%, and there are more than 150 of them in the zone.
- Venom Mist Lurkers in the Western Plaguelands — about 12%.
- Timberweb Recluses in Azshara and Greater Lava Spiders in the Searing Gorge — 7–9%.
- Spiders in Zul'Gurub and Naxxramas — 9–12%.
According to our server database, the crypt fiends of the Eastern Plaguelands do not drop Ironweb Spider Silk — go to Silithus or Lower Blackrock Spire for it instead.
◆What spider silk is used for
Tailoring
- Spider's Silk: Spider Silk Slippers, Spidersilk Boots, Lesser Wizard's Robe, Robes of Arcana (skill 125–150).
- Thick Spider's Silk: Enchanter's Cowl, Boots of the Enchanter, Spider Belt, Icy Cloak (165–200).
- Shadow Silk: the Shadoweave set — pants, robe, gloves, shoulders, boots and mask (210–245), which also need Heavy Silken Thread.
- Ironweb Spider Silk: runecloth and ghostweave items (260–300) together with Bolt of Runecloth and Rune Thread, the Felcloth Bag, the Satchel of Cenarius and top patterns such as the Flarecore Robe, the Bloodvine pieces and the Glacial set. More about bolts in cloth bolts, and about bags in tailoring bags.
Leatherworking and Engineering
Leatherworkers use Spider's Silk for Toughened Leather Gloves and Swift Boots, and Ironweb silk for the Polar and Icy Scale sets, the Lava Belt and Molten Belt, the Corehound Belt and Chromatic Gauntlets. Engineers spend Shadow Silk on the Parachute Cloak and the Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector, and Ironweb silk on the Goblin Jumper Cables XL and the Delicate Arcanite Converter. Full recipe lists are in leatherworking patterns and engineering schematics.
◆Is farming spider silk worth it
Silk drops less often than cloth and is not sold by NPCs, so it is consistently pricier on the auction house. The best seller is Ironweb Spider Silk: nearly every level 60 recipe of three professions needs it. If you farm runecloth in Silithus or the Plaguelands, silk comes as a bonus. For Felcloth and Mooncloth see felcloth and mooncloth.

FAQ
?Where do I get Ironweb Spider Silk?
The best source in our server database is the bosses Mother Smolderweb (about 50%) and Crystal Fang (about 47%) in Lower Blackrock Spire. In the open world, spiders in Silithus and the Western Plaguelands drop it at around 12-13%.
?Can I buy spider silk from a vendor?
No. None of the silk types are sold by NPCs; you get them from spiders or from other players on the auction house. A stack holds 10.
?What is Shadow Silk used for?
Mostly for the tailoring Shadoweave items (pants, robe, gloves, shoulders, boots, mask), and for engineers it goes into the Parachute Cloak and the Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector.
?Can I donate spider silk for reputation?
No. Donation quests only accept cloth: wool, silk, mageweave and runecloth. Silk is better used in crafting or sold.
