# WoW Classic Tailoring Guide

Tailoring is the profession for mages, priests and warlocks, and the best source of large bags in WoW Classic. It's the only profession needing no gathering pair: cloth drops from humanoids you're already killing. On the WoW Classic X5 server runecloth bags are a hot commodity from the first weeks.

Don't vendor crafted gear that raised your skill — disenchant it with enchanting into dust and essences. The tailoring + enchanting pair feeds itself materials.

Leveling 1-300

1-50: Linen Cloth

Collect Linen Cloth from low-level humanoids. Craft Bolt of Linen Cloth and Brown Linen items. Cloth is consumed fast — farm ahead.

50-125: Wool Cloth

Wool Cloth drops in level 20-35 zones: Dustwallow Marsh, Thousand Needles, Arathi. Craft Bolt of Woolen Cloth.

125-175: Silk Cloth

Silk Cloth — Stranglethorn Vale, Badlands, Plaguelands. Azure items and silk gear.

175-225: Mageweave Cloth

Mageweave Cloth — Feralas, southern Stranglethorn, Hellfire ridge. Crimson Silk and Mageweave items.

225-300: Runecloth

Runecloth — Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus, Winterspring, Stratholme. Craft Bolt of Runecloth and runecloth gear. This is the most cloth-hungry stretch — keep a big stockpile.

X5 tip: Mooncloth is crafted once every 4 real days, so start stockpiling early if you aim for a healing set. Mooncloth bags reliably sell high at auction.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Vendoring all cloth. Cloth is the tailor's material and first aid's fuel — set aside stacks of linen, silk and runecloth in advance.
  • Not making bolts. Many recipes need bolts, not raw cloth — keep a supply of Bolt of Runecloth.
  • Forgetting the Mooncloth cooldown. Once every 4 days — plan ahead or a healing set drags on for weeks.
  • Ignoring bags. Even a cheap 14-slot Runecloth Bag frees your inventory early — craft one right away.

The right approach: keep tailoring paired with enchanting — crafted gear disenchants into materials, and the pair feeds itself.

FAQ

Does a tailor need a gathering profession?

No — tailoring is the only profession that needs no gathering pair: cloth drops from humanoids. So a tailor usually takes a second profession freely, most often enchanting, to disenchant their own crafted gear back into materials.

Should a mage, priest or warlock take tailoring?

Yes. A tailor makes the best cloth armor for themselves: Robe of the Archmage for mages, Truefaith Vestments and runecloth sets for raids. Plus rare 16-slot bags — a huge early advantage.

Where do I farm runecloth for leveling?

Runecloth drops heavily from high-level humanoids: Eastern Plaguelands (Scarlet/undead), Silithus, Winterspring, and the Stratholme and Scholomance dungeons. On x5 humanoids die faster, so cloth piles up quickly.
