Locked Chests and Footlockers in Vanilla 1.12.1

Locked chests in WoW Classic are footlockers and large bound chests placed in enemy camps, pirate coves and dungeons. A rogue with Pick Lock can open them, and so can any character holding a blacksmith skeleton key of the right tier. This is a reference for every such chest in Vanilla 1.12.1 on the WoW x5 server: required skill, zones and contents taken from our game database.

How to open locked chests

The main way is the rogue ability Pick Lock. The skill rises with every successful attempt, so footlockers are the main training ground; leveling 1 to 300 and the ability quests are covered in the lockpicking guide, and the class itself on the rogue page.

Options for other classes:

  • Blacksmith skeleton keys are single use. Per the item data, the Silver Skeleton Key opens locks up to 25, the Golden Skeleton Key up to 125, the Truesilver Skeleton Key up to 200 and the Arcanite Skeleton Key up to 300. Recipes and reagents are in the blacksmith skeleton keys article.
  • Seaforium charges blow open locks of the blasting type, which are locked doors. Footlockers have no such lock, so a charge does nothing to them; see seaforium charges for details.
  • A key: several named chests have their own key that drops from a specific NPC (see below).

Ordinary Battered Chests and Solid Chests in the world are not really locked: any character can open them without skill.

Footlockers with the same name can have different locks: a Battered Footlocker in the Wetlands may need 70 or 110. If one will not open, look for the next one.

Large Mithril Bound Chests

The Large Mithril Bound Chest is the most valuable find. In Uldaman it needs skill 175 and holds potions, ore, herbs, leather, cloth and a chance at a bag. In Tyr's Hand (Eastern Plaguelands) the lock is 250, and the loot includes green armor and weapons, thorium blacksmithing plans, runecloth tailoring patterns, high-level herbs, bags and, at a tiny chance, blue items such as The Needler.

Named chests with keys

  • Benedict's Chest in Tiragarde Keep, Durotar. Benedict's Key drops from Lieutenant Benedict, or the lock can be picked at skill 100. It holds the Aged Envelope that starts the quest The Admiral's Orders.
  • Cozzle's Footlocker at Lake Nazferiti, Stranglethorn Vale. Cozzle's Key drops from Foreman Cozzle, or pick it at 160. It holds the Fuel Regulator Blueprints for the quest Goblin Sponsorship.
  • Captain's Chest in Lost Rigger Cove, Tanaris. It opens only with the Captain's Key; picks and keys do not work.

The Pirate's Footlocker drops from level 44 to 45 Southsea pirates and is not locked. It may contain the Captain's Key (about 10 percent), a Ship Schedule, map pieces and joke items. The Captain's Chest itself holds random green gear, gems, recipes, joke items like the Wooden Leg and Parrot Skeleton, and occasionally the blue Wirt's Third Leg.

Are chests worth hunting

As a gold source footlockers are weak: food and potions only pay off when you pass by anyway. Their value is rogue skill training and the rare recipes from mithril chests. For gold see gold farming, and for locked items in your bags see lockboxes and junkboxes.

Where do I find locked footlockers to train lockpicking?

Battered and Waterlogged Footlockers with a 70 and 110 lock sit in the Wetlands, around Durnholde Keep in Hillsbrad Foothills, in Stonetalon Mountains, Redridge Mountains and on the Zoram Strand. Skill 150 to 175 locks are in Angor Fortress, on Sar'theris Strand and at the Pool of Tears. Skill 200 to 225 locks are in the Slag Pit, Lost Rigger Cove and the Bay of Storms. Scarlet Footlockers with a 250 lock are in Tyr's Hand.

Can I open a locked chest without a rogue?

Yes, with a blacksmith skeleton key: Silver opens locks up to 25, Golden up to 125, Truesilver up to 200 and Arcanite up to 300. Seaforium charges do not work on footlockers because they have no blasting lock; charges are meant for locked doors.

What is inside locked footlockers?

Mostly food, drinks and healing potions matching the zone level, and occasionally gems such as Lesser Moonstone, Jade, Citrine or Star Ruby. Large Mithril Bound Chests are better and can hold green gear, recipes, plans and bags.

How do I open the Captain's Chest in Tanaris?

Only with the Captain's Key. The key comes from a Pirate's Footlocker dropped by level 44 to 45 Southsea pirates. The Captain's Chest cannot be picked.
