Lockpicking 1–300 in Vanilla 1.12.1

Section: Getting started & help 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 02.10.2026

Lockpicking is a unique rogue ability that in Vanilla 1.12.1 is leveled by hand, just like a separate profession. Without it you cannot finish the poison quest, open chests in dungeons or save time in Blackrock Depths. Below is a step-by-step 1–300 guide for the WoW x5 server, training spots and alternatives for other classes.

How to Get the Ability

Pick Lock is learned from a rogue trainer at level 16 for 18 silver. To use it you need Thieves' Tools, handed out in the starting quest. Each attempt takes 5 seconds, and the skill cap equals five times your level: 80 at level 16, 100 at level 20, 300 at level 60.

Alliance Quest

The Redridge Rendezvous chain leads you to Lucius in Lakeshire. He gives Alther's Mill: open his lockbox at the mill northeast of town and bring back the token. Practice Lockboxes stand nearby and respawn quickly. The reward is a Certificate of Thievery.

Horde Quest

The Horde chain through Zando'zan leads you to Wrenix the Wretched in Ratchet and take Plundering the Plunderers. The pirate ship south of Ratchet has a practice room full of lockboxes, and the quest chest sits in the hold. Do not forget to grab Thieves' Tools and the E.C.A.C. from Wrenix's apparatus to deal with the parrot.

Skill Leveling by Range

The skill only grows with practice. Lock colour shows your chance of a point: orange always, yellow often, green rarely.

225–250Dented and Mossy FootlockersTanaris, Azshara
250–300Scarlet FootlockersEastern Plaguelands, around Tyr's Hand

Rogue trainers themselves recommend finishing at Tyr's Hand. Use Pick Pocket on the side: roughly level 20–30 mobs drop Battered Junkboxes (skill 1), 30–40 Worn (70), 40–50 Sturdy (175), 50–60 Heavy (250). Engineers can craft a Practice Lock for the very start. It combines well with zone leveling — see Badlands and Tanaris.

Совет

Offer free lockbox opening in trade chat — other players' boxes give skill points just like your own.

Dungeon Chests and Doors

In dungeons lockpicking saves keys and time for the whole group:

  • Large Iron Bound Chests (25) — Blackfathom Deeps, Gnomeregan, Scarlet Monastery, Shadowfang Keep and other early dungeons.
  • Large Mithril Bound Chests (175 and 250) — Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul, Stratholme, Uldaman.
  • Scarlet Monastery doors (175) — Armory and Cathedral without the Scarlet Key.
  • Blackrock Depths — Shadowforge Gate and Lock (250), prison cells and East Garrison (280), and Emperor Dagran Thaurissan drops the Thaurissan Family Jewels box (275).
  • Scholomance — the door (280) that otherwise needs the Skeleton Key.
  • Stratholme and Dire Maul — gates and the Crescent Door require 300.

Learn more in the Blackrock Depths guide, Scholomance guide and dungeon keys guide.

Alternative: Blacksmiths and Engineers

Other classes can open locks too, but only with consumables:

  • Blacksmiths craft skeleton keys: Silver (Blacksmithing 100, locks up to 25), Golden (150, up to 125), Truesilver (200, up to 200) and Arcanite (275, up to 300). The key is consumed on use.
  • Engineers craft Seaforium Charges for doors: Small (Engineering 100), Large (200) and Powerful (275), which blasts open nearly any locked door.

Only a crafter with the required skill can use keys and charges. Find the recipes in the blacksmithing guide and engineering guide.

FAQ

At what level can a rogue pick locks?

Pick Lock is learned from a rogue trainer at level 16. It requires Thieves Tools, handed out in the class quest: for Alliance from Lucius in Lakeshire, for Horde from Wrenix the Wretched in Ratchet.

What is the maximum lockpicking skill?

The skill is capped at five times your character level: 80 at level 16, 100 at level 20 and 300 at level 60. It only grows with practice, so you must open chests, footlockers and junkboxes.

Where do I level lockpicking after 100?

Footlockers in the Wetlands, Hillsbrad Foothills and Stonetalon Mountains work up to roughly 110-150, then Badlands, Tanaris and Searing Gorge, and from 250 the Scarlet footlockers near Tyr's Hand in the Eastern Plaguelands.

Can non-rogues open locks?

Yes. Blacksmiths craft skeleton keys from Silver to Arcanite, and engineers craft Seaforium Charges for doors. Only a crafter with the right profession skill can use them.
