How to install WoW Classic (1.12.1) on Windows 10 and 11
The WoW Classic 1.12.1 client is very easy to install — it's an old game with no heavy installer. Here is the step-by-step guide for Windows 10 and 11.
Contents
Step 1. Download the client
Get the full Vanilla 1.12.1 client (about 5–6 GB) any way you like — see download WoW Vanilla or download via torrent. Wait for the download to fully finish, or the archive won't unpack.
Step 2. Choose the install folder
This is the step where newcomers most often make mistakes.
- Install into a short path with only Latin letters, no spaces: for example
C:\Games\WoW. - Do not install into
C:\Program FilesorProgram Files (x86)— Windows restricts writing there, so the client cannot saverealmlist.wtf, settings and addons. - Keep at least 8 GB free on the disk (archive + unpacked files). See how much the client weighs.
◆Step 3. Unpack the archive
Unpack the downloaded archive (.zip, .rar or .7z) into the chosen folder with 7-Zip or WinRAR. Afterwards the folder should contain Wow.exe, the Data, Interface, WTF folders and the realmlist.wtf file.
Step 4. Set the realmlist
Open realmlist.wtf in Notepad, delete everything and write one line:
set realmlist play.wowx5.ru
Save the file. Common mistakes (an extra .txt extension, a read-only attribute, the wrong locale folder) are covered in the set realmlist guide.
Step 5. Create a shortcut and set compatibility
- Right-click
Wow.exe→ Send to → Desktop (create shortcut). - If the game won't start or crashes on Windows 11 — right-click
Wow.exe→ Properties → Compatibility → enable Windows XP (SP3) compatibility mode and Run as administrator. - See Windows 11 compatibility for details.
◆Step 6. First launch
Launch via the shortcut, enter your X5 login and password, and pick the realm. No account yet? Register. If the client can't see the server, check unable to connect fix.
Done! Next up: connecting to the server and your first steps in Azeroth.
FAQ
?Do I need to run an installer for WoW 1.12.1?
Usually no. The Vanilla client ships as an archive — just unpack it into a folder. No installer is required; the game runs from Wow.exe.
?Where should I install the client?
In a short path without spaces or non-Latin characters, for example C:\Games\WoW. Do not install into Program Files — permissions may prevent saving settings and realmlist.
?Do I need compatibility mode on Windows 11?
Often not, but if the game won't launch or crashes, enable Windows XP SP3 compatibility and Run as administrator for Wow.exe.
