Getting Dropped and «World Server is down»: Fixing Disconnects

Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru

If WoW keeps dropping you with «Disconnected from server» or «World Server is down», in the vast majority of cases the cause is your own network, not the server. Here is the order of actions from quick to serious.

Step 1: check for a restart

Scheduled server reboots throw a mass «World Server is down» for everyone at once. Check the project news and Discord: if a restart is announced, wait a couple of minutes and log back in.

Step 2: switch to a cable

Wi-Fi is the #1 cause of unstable disconnects. The radio channel picks up interference from neighbouring networks, microwaves and walls. Connect your PC to the router with a cable — in 80% of cases the drops stop.

Step 3: free up the channel

While playing, turn off everything that eats bandwidth:

  • torrents, downloads, cloud sync;
  • video streaming on other devices;
  • VPNs and proxies — they add latency and break points.

Step 4: reboot the router

Routers with weeks of uptime leak memory and drop long sessions. Power the router off for 30 seconds and back on. Check that it is not overheating too.

Step 5: connection diagnostics

Open a command prompt and check the route to the realm:

CommandWhat it shows
ping play.wowx5.ruPacket loss and ping stability
tracert play.wowx5.ruWhere the connection breaks

Large loss or stars in the trace mean an ISP problem — contact their support with this data.

Step 6: network and client

  • Update your network card driver from the vendor site.
  • Clear the game cache: delete the Cache folder in the WoW directory.
  • Verify the realmlist — guide. A wrong address causes drops while the world loads.
  • Temporarily disable addons: heavy addons sometimes cause timeouts.

FAQ

What does «World Server is down» mean in WoW?

The client lost the connection to the world server. It is either a brief drop in your internet or a scheduled server restart. If there is no restart, the problem is almost always your network: Wi-Fi, router or ISP.

Why do I get dropped specifically in a raid or fight?

Crowded zones and raids generate more traffic, and an unstable link (especially Wi-Fi) cannot handle the peaks. Switch to a wired connection and close torrents, streams and VPNs while playing.

How do I tell if it is me or the server?

Open a console and run ping play.wowx5.ru. Large packet loss or a jumping ping means the link to the server is the problem. A steady reply during drops means the issue is the client or a server restart.
