Gear Durability and Repair in WoW Classic
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruDurability is a quiet but important WoW Classic system. Neglected gear "zeroes out" at the worst moment — for example, mid-raid. On WowX5 x5 the durability mechanic is identical to original Vanilla.
How durability works
- Every armor and weapon piece has a durability value X/Y (current/max).
- Armor loses durability when you take damage.
- Weapons lose durability when you land hits.
- Death removes 10% durability from all equipped gear.
- Resurrecting at the Spirit Healer removes an additional 25%.
Check durability before a dungeon or raid: hover over items or watch the "broken armor" icon in the top-right — yellow means "time to repair," red means "too late."
What happens at zero durability
An item at 0 durability stops working entirely:
| Item type | Effect at 0 |
|---|---|
| Armor | No protection or stats |
| Weapon | Deals no damage |
| Item icon | Turns red |
Playing with "red" gear is nearly pointless and dangerous — damage and survivability drop sharply.
Where to repair
- Repair NPCs — look for the hammer/anvil icon on the map: blacksmiths, armor and weapon vendors in cities, inns, and camps.
- Repairs cost gold; the price scales with item level and quality.
- You can repair individual items or everything at once with "Repair All Items."
Field repair (engineering)
The engineering profession provides Repair Bots (e.g., Field Repair Bot 74A) that can be placed right inside a dungeon or raid — the whole group repairs without a trip to town. This is one reason raiders love engineering.
Practical tips for beginners
1. Repair gear before every dungeon or raid run. 2. Keep some "repair gold" — especially before long outings. 3. After a string of deaths, always check durability.

FAQ
What lowers durability in WoW Classic?
Armor loses durability when you take damage; weapons lose it when you land hits. In addition, each death removes 10% durability from all equipped gear, and resurrecting at the Spirit Healer removes an extra 25%.
What happens if durability hits zero?
An item at zero durability stops working entirely: armor gives no protection or stats, weapons deal no damage. The item icon turns red. Playing with 'red' gear is very dangerous.
Where and how much does repair cost?
Repairs are done at NPCs with a hammer/anvil icon (blacksmiths, armor and weapon vendors, repair NPCs in cities and camps). Cost scales with item level and quality. Engineers can place a Repair Bot in the field.
