"Unable to connect" — Wrong Realmlist

This is by far the most common issue. WoW 1.12.1 reads the server address from a file called realmlist.wtf.

How to fix: 1. Navigate to <WoW folder>/Data/enUS/ (use Data/ruRU/ if you have the Russian client). 2. Open realmlist.wtf in any plain-text editor (Notepad works fine). 3. Make sure the file contains only this line: `` set realmlist play.wowx5.ru ` 4. Save the file and restart wow.exe`.

Watch out for trailing spaces or extra characters at the end of the line — delete everything except the line above.

Client Won't Launch

  • Confirm you have the 1.12.1 client. Right-click wow.exe → Properties → Details and check the file version. Later expansion clients will not work.
  • Run wow.exe as Administrator (right-click → Run as administrator).
  • If the client crashes immediately, your antivirus may be quarantining a game file. Add the WoW folder to your antivirus exclusion list and try again.
  • On Windows 10/11, try setting compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 (right-click wow.exe → Properties → Compatibility).

"Incorrect Password" Error

  • Check that CapsLock is off — the password field is case-sensitive.
  • Make sure you're using the credentials from your wowx5.ru account, not another service.
  • If you're certain the password is correct, reset it via the "Forgot password?" link on the website login page.

White or Black Screen During Loading

Addon conflicts are the most common culprit: 1. On the character selection screen, click the Addons button and disable all addons. 2. Log in — if the game loads normally, one of your addons is causing the issue. 3. Re-enable addons one at a time, reloading with /console reloadui after each, until you find the problem addon.

If addons aren't the issue, update or reinstall your graphics card drivers. Also try lowering the video settings in the WoW options menu before logging in.

High Latency and Lag

  • Disable VPN if you have one running — it can route traffic inefficiently. Conversely, if you're experiencing routing issues, a VPN pointed closer to Europe may help.
  • Check that Windows Firewall or your antivirus isn't throttling wow.exe. Add an explicit allow rule for it.
  • Close background applications consuming bandwidth (torrents, cloud sync, streaming).
  • Test your connection by running ping play.wowx5.ru in a command prompt. If you see packet loss, the issue is likely your ISP or routing.

Addon Conflicts

If a newly installed addon breaks your interface: 1. Type /console reloadui in chat — this reloads the UI without a full client restart. 2. If that doesn't fix it, delete the Cache and WTF folders inside your WoW directory. They will regenerate on next launch. Note: this resets all addon settings to defaults. 3. If you're unsure which addon is the problem, disable all addons from the character screen and add them back one at a time.

Patch Won't Apply

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus during patch installation — security software often blocks game file modifications.
  • Ensure you have write permissions on the WoW folder. Avoid installing WoW inside C:\Program Files for this reason.
  • Run the patch installer as Administrator.

FAQ

What does 'Unable to connect' mean?

It almost always means your realmlist.wtf file is wrong. Open Data/enUS/realmlist.wtf and make sure it contains exactly: set realmlist play.wowx5.ru

Why won't the WoW client launch?

Make sure you have the 1.12.1 client, not a later expansion. Try running wow.exe as Administrator and add the WoW folder to your antivirus exclusions.

How do I reset addons when there's a conflict?

Type /console reloadui in chat to reload the UI. If that doesn't help, disable all addons on the character screen and re-enable them one by one to find the culprit.
