WoW client downloads slowly: how to speed up the download

Section: Getting started & help 2 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 28.09.2026

The full WoW 1.12.1 client weighs 5–6 GB, and on a slow connection the download can drag on. Let's look at why the speed is low and how to raise it.

Common causes of slow downloads

CauseSymptomFix
Few seedsSpeed jumps, stalls near zeroDownload during active hours, wait for seeds
Torrent capSpeed stuck at a flat numberRemove the limit in settings
Closed port"No incoming", slowOpen the port in firewall and router
ISP throttlingDirect link faster than torrentUse a mirror
Weak Wi-FiUnstable speedConnect via cable

Method 1. Tune your torrent client

  1. Remove the download speed limit in settings (set "unlimited").
  2. Increase the number of connections and slots.
  3. Allow the program through Windows Firewall and, if possible, open its port on the router (port forwarding).
  4. Don't run many other downloads at once.

See the download via torrent guide for details.

Method 2. Change the source

If the torrent stays slow, try a direct link or another mirror from the download page. Some ISPs throttle torrent traffic while direct HTTP downloads run at full speed.

Method 3. Check your environment

  • Temporarily stop other downloads, streaming and system updates.
  • Connect to the router by cable instead of Wi-Fi for steadier speed.
  • Make sure the antivirus isn't scanning every chunk on the fly (you can pause it briefly).

After downloading

Once the client is downloaded, be sure to verify file integrity, then move on to installation. If in-game latency is high after install, that's a different topic — see high latency and lag.

FAQ

Why is the WoW client downloading so slowly?

Most often it's few seeds in the torrent, a speed cap in the program's settings, a closed port, or the ISP throttling torrent traffic. Each cause can be fixed.

How do I speed up a torrent download?

Remove speed limits in the client, open the port in your firewall and router, and download during active hours when there are more seeds. Switching to qBittorrent sometimes helps.

What if the torrent won't download at all?

Check whether an antivirus or ISP is blocking the traffic, try a different torrent client, or use a direct mirror link from the download page.
