Why you can't just download and run

The original Mac 1.12.1 client is 32-bit. Starting with macOS Catalina (10.15) the system supports only 64-bit apps, so the old client won't start. The fix is to run the Windows version through a compatibility layer.

Option 1: compatibility layer (Wine/CrossOver)

The most reliable path on any modern macOS:

1. Install a Wine-based layer (CrossOver, Whisky or similar). 2. Create a separate environment (bottle) for the game. 3. Extract the WoW 1.12.1 client into it. 4. Run WoW.exe inside the environment.

Option 2: Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3)

On ARM chips the layer additionally translates x86 instructions. The 2006 client is extremely light, so performance is more than enough even on base Macs.

Realmlist setup

Inside the environment find realmlist.wtf in the WoW folder and enter:

`` set realmlist play.wowx5.ru ``

It is the same address as on Windows — see the detailed realmlist guide.

FAQ

Will WoW 1.12.1 run directly on a modern Mac?

No. The old Mac client is 32-bit, and macOS Catalina and newer support only 64-bit apps. You need a compatibility layer (Wine/CrossOver or similar) that runs the Windows version of the client.

How do I play WoW Classic on Apple Silicon M1/M2?

Through a Wine-based compatibility layer with translation — it runs the Windows 1.12.1 client on ARM. Performance is plenty: the 2006 client is very light.

How do I set the realmlist on Mac?

Same as the Windows version inside the compatibility layer: open realmlist.wtf in the WoW folder and enter set realmlist play.wowx5.ru. Find the path inside the environment where the client is installed.
