WoW 1.12.1 in Russian: localization and client languages
The WoW Vanilla 1.12.1 client can run in English (enUS) or Russian. Let's look at the options and how to install a localization pack.
Contents
◆There was no official Russian 1.12.1
An important point: no official Russian localization of original Vanilla existed from Blizzard — the Russian WoW client only appeared in the Wrath of the Lich King era. So "Russian Vanilla" is the English 1.12.1 client with a fan localization pack installed.
Client language folders
The client stores language in a locale folder inside Data:
| Locale | Folder | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| enUS | Data\enUS | English (base client) |
| ruRU | Data\ruRU | Russian pack (fan-made) |
The realmlist lives in the locale folder your client uses. If you play with the Russian pack, edit Data\ruRU\realmlist.wtf; on English, edit Data\enUS\realmlist.wtf. See set realmlist and folder structure.
How to install the pack
- Download the English 1.12.1 client (download WoW Vanilla).
- Download a 1.12.1 localization pack (usually MPQ patches plus a
ruRUfolder). - Copy the
ruRUfolder intoData, and place patch files per the pack's instructions. - Write
set realmlist play.wowx5.ruintoData\ruRU\realmlist.wtf. - Launch the game — the interface and texts will switch to Russian.
◆English or Russian — which to pick
- English (enUS) — recommended: item, zone and ability names match guides and addons (Questie, pfQuest, Atlas). Fewer conflicts.
- Russian (pack) — nicer for reading quests and lore in your native language, but some addons assume English names.
Your call: the X5 server works with both locales equally. After setting the language, move on to connecting and registration.
FAQ
?Is there an official Russian WoW 1.12.1 client?
There was no official Blizzard Russian localization for patch 1.12.1 — Russian arrived in WoW later. To play in Russian you use a fan localization pack installed into the client's language folder.
?Where do I install the localization pack?
The pack's files go into the locale folder inside Data, usually Data\ruRU. After that, edit realmlist.wtf in that same locale folder, not in enUS.
?Can I play on the English client?
Yes. The enUS client is fully functional and often preferable: guides, addons and item names match the original. Language is a matter of taste.
