Crescent Key: How to Open the Dire Maul Wings

Why you need the key
Dire Maul has three wings with barred gates between them. The Crescent Key removes those locks and opens the full route — including access to bosses and the tribute room (Tribute Run) in the west wing.
Method 1: Knot Thimblejack's Cache
In the north wing there is a chest — Knot Thimblejack's Cache — that drops the Crescent Key. This is the most reliable way for any class to get the key.
Method 2: Rogue lockpicking
A rogue with enough Lockpicking skill can open the barred doors directly — no key needed. Handy if your group has a rogue.
Method 3: Goblin engineering
An engineer can blast some locks open with explosives. It is situational but saves the day when you have neither key nor rogue.
The key is Bind on Pickup and lives in your key ring. Once you have it, you no longer depend on the cache and can open the doors on any run.

Grab the key on your very first run: on fast rates you will farm Dire Maul repeatedly for spell books, enchants and Tier 0.5 items. A permanent key saves time on every trip.
