Mithril Spurs and Mount Speed Bonuses in 1.12

Mithril Spurs are a blacksmithing item that attaches to your boots and gives +4% mounted movement speed. They are one of the few Vanilla-era enhancements that make your mount faster. On the WoW x5 server spurs are valued by everyone who travels a lot or fights in battleground PvP.

What Mithril Spurs do

Spurs are a permanent boot enhancement. In our server database the use spell (Mithril Spurs, ID 9783) applies a permanent enchant to an armor item in the feet slot. This means spurs occupy the boot enchant slot and replace any existing enchant, such as +7 Agility or +5 Stamina from the boot enchants list. The exact bonus is +4% mounted speed: in 1.12 the boot line simply reads Mithril Spurs, and the numeric label was only added later.

  1. Raise Blacksmithing to at least 235; the leveling route is in the blacksmithing guide.
  2. Find Plans: Mithril Spurs. According to the database they drop from hundreds of monster types all over the world and from chests at about 0.02%, so most players buy them on the auction house.
  3. Prepare 4 Mithril Bars and 3 Solid Grinding Stones, bring a Blacksmith Hammer and stand next to an anvil.
  4. Craft the spurs, then click them and select your boots. Only a blacksmith with skill 215 can attach them.

Other ways to speed up your mount in 1.12

Besides spurs, 1.12.1 has two more sources of bonus mounted speed. They all use different slots, so you can wear them together.

The Carrot on a Stick is the reward for the quest Gahz'rilla. It is given by Wizzle Brassbolts at Mirage Raceway in Thousand Needles: you need Gahz'rilla's Electrified Scale from the Zul'Farrak dungeon. Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill is applied by an enchanter with skill 250 using 2 Large Brilliant Shards and 3 Dream Dust. The formula is a rare world drop. Other options are listed in the glove enchants article.

According to Wowpedia the effects of the spurs, the carrot and the glove enchant stack. The base speed still comes from the mount itself: read about riding skill in the riding skill guide and about choosing a mount in the mounts guide.

Usage: PvP, travel and leveling

  • PvP. In battlegrounds spurs help you reach a flag or a base first; on big maps like Alterac Valley the time saved adds up over the whole battle.
  • Travel and farming. Gathering ore and herbs, moving between zones and running to dungeons all take less time.
  • Leveling. Spurs are useful after you buy your first mount at level 40, but sacrificing a raid boot enchant for them is not worth it.

Keep two pairs of boots: raid boots with an Agility or Stamina enchant and travel boots with spurs. Swapping boots out of combat takes a second, and the speed bonus is noticeable on every trip.
