Mechanical Chicken: the OOX Homing Robot Chain in WoW Classic

Section: Lore & bestiary 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 16.10.2026

The Mechanical Chicken is a non-combat pet shaped like a miniature OOX homing robot, built by the gnomish inventor Oglethorpe Obnoticus of Booty Bay. It is one of the best-known quest rewards in Vanilla: to earn it you have to rescue three real robots in three different zones. On the WoW x5 server the chain works exactly as in the original patch 1.12.1.

What the pet is and what it looks like

The Mechanical Chicken is a scaled-down copy of the OOX homing robot: an angular metal body with red and blue plates, a comb and a funny gait. According to Oglethorpe, the model has its combat mechanisms and homing logic disabled, so it simply follows its owner. The pet does not fight and grants no bonuses — it is a pure collectible like the other companion pets of WoW Classic.

The robots are named OOX-17/TN, OOX-09/HL and OOX-22/FE after the zones they crashed in, and the final quest is called An OOX of Your Own. In the Russian client the names vary, but it is the same OOX series.

How to get it: step by step

  1. Obtain a distress beacon in each of the three zones. Beacons are random drops from local mobs: in Tanaris the easiest place to farm is Zul'Farrak, in The Hinterlands the beacon drops from local beasts and trolls, most often in the troll fortress of Jintha'Alor, and in Feralas it can come from any mob in the zone, so it is easiest to pick up while questing.
  2. Use the beacon to get a quest to find the robot. Bring the beacon to the crashed chicken: in Tanaris it lies at roughly 60, 64, in The Hinterlands near the river by Skulk Rock, and in Feralas in a cave near Feral Scar Vale.
  3. Take the escort quest from the robot and lead it to its take-off point: in Tanaris to Steamwheedle Port, in The Hinterlands to the shoreline beyond Overlook Cliffs, and in Feralas to the dock on the Forgotten Coast.
  4. After each rescue turn the quest in to Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay and choose one of two rewards.
  5. Once all three robots are safe, Oglethorpe offers the final quest An OOX of Your Own and hands you the Mechanical Chicken. The route to the gnome is covered in how to get to Booty Bay.

Every quest in the chain raises your reputation with Booty Bay and lowers your standing with the Bloodsail Buccaneers. For players working on Booty Bay reputation, that is a nice bonus.

Tips for the OOX chain

Совет

Do not throw the beacon away if you cannot use it right now: it is unique and binds on pickup, but you can start the quest whenever you are in the right zone.

  • During the escort the robot is ambushed several times by small groups of mobs, and it also draws wandering monsters along the way. Go with a group or play a class with good crowd control.
  • The robot moves slowly: clear the path in advance and stay close — if it dies, the quest fails and you have to pick it up again.
  • If the Tanaris beacon refuses to drop, join a Zul'Farrak group and tell everyone you need it.
  • The Feralas beacon is available first, so start the chain there and then move on to Tanaris and The Hinterlands.
  • You cannot lose the chicken: the item stays in your bags, and the pet never joins combat.

FAQ

How do I get the Mechanical Chicken in WoW Classic?

Find the three OOX distress beacons in Tanaris, Feralas and The Hinterlands, use them to locate the crashed robots and escort each one to safety. After all three rescues Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay offers An OOX of Your Own, which rewards the pet.

What level is the OOX chain?

The Feralas beacon starts its quest at level 40, the Tanaris and Hinterlands beacons at level 43. The escort quests are level 45 to 48 and the final quest is level 50, so the chain is most comfortable at roughly level 48 to 52.

Can the Horde get the Mechanical Chicken?

Yes, the whole chain is neutral. Oglethorpe Obnoticus stands in Booty Bay and rewards both factions, and the beacons drop from mobs in the open world and dungeons for any player.

Where is the fastest place to get the Tanaris beacon?

The OOX-17/TN beacon drops from various Tanaris mobs, but players traditionally get it in Zul'Farrak, where a full clear yields it most often. Since patch 1.8.4 the beacons can drop for every group member.
