Non-Combat Companion Pets in WoW Classic: Every Way to Get Them
Companion pets in WoW Classic (also called vanity or non-combat pets) are tiny critters and gadgets that follow your character around and do nothing except look cute. Patch 1.12.1 has about fifty of them, obtained in very different ways: from a 40 silver purchase to an ultra-rare drop from pirates. The WoW x5 server runs every original Vanilla mechanic, and this hub gathers all of them in one place.

What a companion pet is in 1.12.1
Vanilla has no pet journal and no pet battles — all of that came years later. A pet here is an item in your bags: a cat carrier, a frog box, a prairie dog whistle or an egg. Right-click summons the critter, another click dismisses it. The item is not consumed and not learned as a spell; it stays in your inventory and takes up a slot. Pets moved into the spellbook only in patch 3.0.2.

Key rules of 1.12.1:
- A pet never attacks, takes no damage in normal combat and grants no stats.
- Almost all pet items bind when used: an unopened carrier can be sold on the auction house or mailed.
- In 1.12 summoning a pet dismounts you, so call your critter while standing on the ground.
- Do not confuse companions with hunter combat pets: those are tamed, fed and fight, while companions only follow you.
How to get a pet: step by step
- Pick a critter from the tables below and check its source.
- Check the faction: capital city vendors sell only to their own side. The vendor list with prices is on the where to buy pets page.
- If the vendor belongs to the other faction, look for the carrier on the neutral auction house in Booty Bay, Gadgetzan or Everlook.
- For quest and rare critters, open the dedicated article: Mechanical Chicken, dungeon pets, rare world drop pets, engineering pets.
- Right-click the item to use it and keep your collection in a separate bag or in the bank.

Collector's Edition pets
Mini Diablo (Diablo Stone), Panda Cub (Panda Collar) and Zergling (Zergling Leash) were given to owners of the original game's Collector's Edition, and Murky (Blue Murloc Egg) to BlizzCon 2005 visitors. These pets are usually unavailable on private servers, so do not count on them for your collection.
Collector tips
Buy the other faction's pets from alts through the neutral auction house: a carrier is not bound until it has been opened.
- The cheapest starters are the 20 silver rabbit for the Alliance and the 50 silver cockroach or snakes for the Horde.
- The quest Mechanical Chicken is open to both factions and is finished around level 50.
- Farm rare drops while levelling: the chance for whelplings and the Hyacinth Macaw is a fraction of a percent.
- Pets take bag space, so the bank is a convenient place for your collection.

FAQ
?Is there a pet journal in WoW Classic 1.12?
No. In patch 1.12.1 a companion is a regular item in your bags: a carrier, a box, a whistle or an egg. Right-click summons the critter and a second click dismisses it. A dedicated pets tab only arrived with Wrath of the Lich King in patch 3.0.2.
?Can I sell a companion pet on the Auction House?
Yes, as long as the item is unused. Almost every Vanilla pet binds when used, so an unopened carrier can be sold or mailed. After the first summon the item becomes soulbound.
?How can a Horde player get a cat from Elwynn Forest?
Not directly: Donni Anthania sells cats to the Alliance only. The Horde has to use the neutral auction house in Booty Bay, Gadgetzan or Everlook, where Alliance players list unopened carriers.
?Do companion pets give any combat bonus?
No. They do not fight, grant no stats and do not affect experience. They are pure cosmetics and collection. Do not confuse them with hunter combat pets or warlock demons.
