Dragon whelps are the earliest growth stage of a dragon. About the size of a large hound, they gather in swarms near nests and lairs, watched over by adult kin. They are the weakest but most numerous part of the dragon kind, and it is from whelps that most players first learn the colors of the dragonflights.
A lone whelp is harmless, but there is almost never just one. Charging into a nest, be ready for the whole winged swarm to descend on you at once.
Whelps by flight color
Even young, a whelp wields its flight's element. Reds heal and burn with fire, blacks spit flame and lava, blues strike with frost and arcane, greens spread poison and sleep. The scale color makes the brood's flight easy to read.

Farming rare pets
Whelps are famous for their loot, not their fight. Red whelps in the Burning Steppes rarely drop the Crimson Whelpling, one of the most wanted pets in Vanilla. Blue whelps in Winterspring drop the Azure Whelpling, greens in the Swamp of Sorrows the Emerald Whelpling. The drop is extremely rare, so pet hunting is for the patient.
