Dragon Whelps — youngest of the dragonflights
Dragon whelps are the earliest growth stage of a dragon. About the size of a large hound, they gather in swarms near nests and lairs, watched over by adult kin. They are the weakest but most numerous part of the dragon kind, and it is from whelps that most players first learn the colors of the dragonflights.
A lone whelp is harmless, but there is almost never just one. Charging into a nest, be ready for the whole winged swarm to descend on you at once.
◆Whelps by flight color
Even young, a whelp wields its flight's element. Reds heal and burn with fire, blacks spit flame and lava, blues strike with frost and arcane, greens spread poison and sleep. The scale color makes the brood's flight easy to read.

Farming rare pets
Whelps are famous for their loot, not their fight. Red whelps in the Wetlands rarely drop the Tiny Crimson Whelpling, one of the most wanted pets in Vanilla. Fire whelps in the Badlands and Dustwallow Marsh drop the Dark Whelpling, Dreaming Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows the Tiny Emerald Whelpling. There is no Azure Whelpling in 1.12.1: it was added in patch 2.3.0. The chance is about 0.1% for all of them, so pet hunting is for the patient. A swarm of whelps is the first draconic test on the road to the great wyrms. Beating them is a step toward true dragons: grown drakes and raid bosses Onyxia and Nefarian.

In 1.12.1 the Tiny Crimson Whelpling pet drops from red whelps in the Wetlands (Crimson, Red and Flamesnorting Whelps, levels 23–27). The chance is about 0.1%, so farming takes patience, but you can also buy the pet on the auction house.
?Are whelps dangerous to a player?
Alone a whelp is weak and easy to kill, but they almost always attack in a swarm. Several whelps at once, especially with fire or frost breath, can catch a careless player off guard in the open world.
