Elemental Reagents in WoW Classic 1.12: Essences, Elementals, Hearts and Cores
Elemental reagents are six green essences, four white elementals and five intermediate elemental items: hearts, globes, cores, breath and ichor. Almost every crafting profession needs them at skill 300, and on the WoW x5 server with boosted leveling players start hunting for them around level 50. Below is a summary table of the 1.12.1 item names, the main sources and everything about transmutes.

◆The three tiers of elemental reagents
In 1.12.1 elemental reagents come in three tiers. Elementals such as Elemental Fire (item level 25) drop from level 30–50 elementals and are used in mid-tier recipes. Derived items — Heart of Fire, Globe of Water, Core of Earth, Breath of Wind and Ichor of Undeath — are item level 45. Essences (item level 55, uncommon quality) are the key reagent of high-end recipes. All of them stack to 10.
Russian-speaking players sometimes call them “essence” and sometimes “substance”; in the English 1.12.1 client the item names are Essence of Fire, Essence of Water and so on, while the life one is called Living Essence.

◆Where to farm: an overview by element
Fire is best farmed on Fire Plume Ridge in Un'Goro Crater and in the Blackrock dungeons: elementals there drop both Heart of Fire and Essence of Fire. Earth and air mostly come from Silithus, where dust stormers and desert rumblers drop breath, cores and essences. Water means Felwood and the plagued water elementals in the east. Undeath drops from the undead of Stratholme and Scholomance, and life comes from treants and plant creatures.
The elemental invasion bosses are a special case: Baron Charr, Avalanchion, The Windreaver and Princess Tempestria. Each one drops the matching essence with a 70–80% chance. Read more in the article on elemental invasions.
◆Alchemy transmutes
An alchemist with skill 275 and a Philosopher’s Stone can turn one essence into another once per day. The four-element ring only works in one direction: air → fire → earth → water → air. On top of that there are two pairs, water ↔ undeath and earth ↔ life.

All eight transmutes share the same pattern: a 1 day cooldown and a 25 second cast. The Air to Fire recipe is sold for Argent Dawn reputation.
◆“Heart of Fire → Essence of Fire”: what does not exist in 1.12.1
A common question is whether essences can be assembled from hearts or globes. According to our server database, 1.12.1 has no such recipes: Heart of Fire, Globe of Water, Core of Earth, Breath of Wind and Ichor of Undeath have no “Use” effect. They are ordinary crafting reagents.
The only conversion goes the other way — the alchemy “Transmute: Elemental Fire”. The recipe is sold by Lokhtos Darkbargainer in Blackrock Depths at Friendly with the Thorium Brotherhood and requires Alchemy 300.

The hungriest recipe is the Alchemists' Stone: 8 each of Essence of Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Living Essence, plus 2 Black Vitriol and 4 Black Lotus. Essences also go into weapon and cloak enchantments, Timbermaw and Cenarion Circle armor, and the engineering Force Reactive Disk. Before farming a specific essence, ask an alchemist friend whether they have a free daily transmute — trading “air for fire” is often cheaper than farming.

?Can Heart of Fire be turned into Essence of Fire in 1.12.1?
No. Patch 1.12.1 has no recipe and no on-use effect that turns a heart, globe, core or breath into an essence. The only processing of a derived reagent is an alchemy transmute: one Heart of Fire becomes three Elemental Fire.
?Which elemental transmutes can an alchemist learn?
Eight daily transmutes: Air to Fire, Fire to Earth, Earth to Water, Water to Air, Undeath to Water, Water to Undeath, Life to Earth and Earth to Life. All of them need a Philosopher’s Stone and Alchemy 275.
?How often can I transmute essences?
Once per day: every essence transmute has a 1 day cooldown and a 25 second cast. Transmute Elemental Fire from Heart of Fire has only a 10 minute cooldown.
?How much do essences sell to a vendor?
Essence of Fire, Water, Earth and Air sell for 4 silver, Living Essence for 5 silver and Essence of Undeath for 10 silver. The auction house price on WoW x5 is much higher.
