Living Essence is the green nature reagent needed by leatherworkers, blacksmiths, tailors, engineers and enchanters at skill 300. Unlike fire or water, life in 1.12.1 has no elemental tier and no heart: there is only the essence itself. On the WoW x5 server it is farmed in Felwood, Dire Maul and the Western Plaguelands.

Felwood and Un'Goro

Northern Felwood is home to the Irontree Woods treants — Irontree Stompers and Irontree Wanderers — and further south you will meet Warpwood Shredders and Warpwood Moss Flayers. Their chance is only about 1–2%, but there are many of them and they are not elite. In Un'Goro Crater Living Essence drops from the tar beasts around the Lakkari Tar Pits — and you can farm Essence of Fire on nearby Fire Plume Ridge at the same time.

Western Plaguelands

In the Western Plaguelands the bog beasts of the Weeping Cave — Rotting Behemoth and Decaying Horror — drop Living Essence at about 2%. The real prize is The Husk, a level 62 rare: the essence drops from it almost every time, so always kill it when you see it.

Dire Maul — the best group farm

The best chances come from the plant creatures of Dire Maul: the lashers and Warpwood treants of the east wing, plus Ironbark Protectors and petrified treants. A 5–9% chance per mob combined with their density makes the dungeon the best place when you need several essences at once — for example for a leatherworking breastplate.

Transmute: Earth to Life and back

An alchemist can create Living Essence from Essence of Earth with a transmute. You need skill 275, a Philosopher’s Stone and Recipe: Transmute Earth to Life, which is a rare drop from level 50+ mobs. There is also the reverse Recipe: Transmute Life to Earth. Both are once per day.

Since Essence of Earth is easier to get in Silithus and Molten Core, the trade is often worth it. Also keep Essence of Water in mind: earth can be turned into water with a different daily recipe, so decide which conversion you need more.

Alchemy: Alchemists' Stone — 8 Living Essence together with four other essences.
Leatherworking: Living Breastplate, Living Leggings and Living Shoulders; Golden Mantle of the Dawn (Argent Dawn, Revered); Primal Batskin Jerkin (Zandalar Tribe, Revered); Timbermaw Brawlers and Might of the Timbermaw.
Blacksmithing: Wildthorn Mail, Heavy Timbermaw Belt and Boots, Ironvine Breastplate (Cenarion Circle, Revered).
Tailoring: Gaea's Embrace, Sylvan Vest, Sylvan Crown, Wisdom and Mantle of the Timbermaw.
Engineering: Force Reactive Disk — 12 Living Essence, Lifelike Mechanical Toad, Ultra-Flash Shadow Reflector.
Enchanting: Enchant Weapon - Lifestealing, Enchant Weapon - Healing Power, Enchant Bracer - Healing Power, Enchant Cloak - Greater Nature Resistance.

Many of these items belong to nature resistance gear and the formulas in the enchanting section.
