Essence of Water: Where to Get It and What It Is Used For
Essence of Water is a green item level 55 reagent that carries roughly half of the frost resistance recipes and a lot of caster gear in Vanilla 1.12.1. On the WoW x5 server accelerated leveling gets characters to 60 quickly, so demand for this reagent shows up within the first weeks.
It is one of the six elemental essences; the overall picture of the cluster is described in the elemental reagents reference.

What the item is
Essence of WaterItem Level 55Max Stack: 10Sell Price: 4 silverEssence of Water has lesser relatives. Elemental Water is a white reagent for early recipes. Globe of Water is a white mid-level reagent. Important: in 1.12.1 there is no way to combine globes into an essence, unlike in later expansions. Globes and essences are obtained and spent independently.
◆Where to get Essence of Water
The main sources are water creatures of levels 53 to 60. The numbers below come from our server's loot tables.

Felwood: the best place to start
Twelve Toxic Horrors stand in Irontree Woods in northern Felwood. They are not elite, respawn quickly and still have the highest drop chance among regular mobs. Their loot table even includes alchemy transmute recipes, although the chance is tiny. Keep in mind that on our server Toxic Horrors are immune to nature magic, so druids and shamans should rely on other schools.
Eastern Plaguelands
In the Eastern Plaguelands four kinds of creatures drop the reagent. Blighted Surges and Plague Ravagers swim in Lake Mereldar, which makes this spot comfortable for shamans and druids. More about the creatures themselves is in the article on water elementals.
Elemental invasions
In Winterspring, around Lake Kel'Theril, Watery Invaders and their leader Princess Tempestria appear from time to time. She drops Essence of Water almost every time, often two at once. The event is described in the article on elemental invasions.
Silithus Wind Stones
Another source is the water servants of the Twilight's Hammer cult summoned at the Wind Stones of Silithus. The Azure Templar gives about 3%, the Duke of Fathoms about 6%. Lord Skwol drops 1–2 essences in more than half of the kills. Summoning requires the Twilight Cultist set, and the higher lords also need cult insignia.
◆Fishing in Azshara
Since patch 1.9 Azshara, mostly the Bay of Storms, has whirlpools called Patch of Elemental Water. Our server has six such spots. A pool yields Elemental Water (about 40%), Globe of Water and Essence of Water at roughly 30% each. More on how pools work is in the article on fishing pools. ◆Alchemy transmutes
An alchemist with skill 275 can create the essence by transmutation. Each transmute requires a Philosopher's Stone, and all transmutes share one cooldown of 1 day.

- Undeath to Water. The recipe is a rare world drop from mobs of roughly level 45 to 60. It consumes Essence of Undeath.
- Water to Air and Water to Undeath work the other way round; that is how water becomes Essence of Air.

A separate expense is the frost resistance sets from Naxxramas: Icebane, Glacial, Polar and Icy Scale. Each piece asks for 2 to 6 essences. Before the first trips into the necropolis the auction price rises noticeably, so it pays to stock up early. For a long farming session free a couple of bag slots in advance: one stack holds only 10 essences, and cloth and other loot drop along the way.

?What is the best place to farm Essence of Water in 1.12.1?
The most reliable spots are the Toxic Horrors in Irontree Woods (Felwood) and the water elementals of Lake Mereldar in the Eastern Plaguelands. Another option is fishing the Patch of Elemental Water pools in Azshara, where roughly every third catch is an Essence of Water.
?Can I turn Globe of Water into Essence of Water?
No. Patch 1.12.1 has no recipe that converts Globe of Water into Essence of Water. The globe is a separate reagent used by tailors, leatherworkers and engineers.
?Which transmutes create Essence of Water?
Two of them: Transmute Earth to Water (sold by Meilosh in Timbermaw Hold, requires Friendly with Timbermaw Hold) and Transmute Undeath to Water (a rare drop from high-level mobs). Both require Alchemy 275 and a Philosopher's Stone and have a 1 day cooldown.
?How much does Essence of Water sell for to a vendor?
A vendor pays 4 silver for it. The real price is set by the auction house: when raid content opens, leatherworkers, tailors and enchanters buy it in bulk.
