Essence of Air: Where to Get It and Why You Need It

Essence of Air is a green item level 55 elemental reagent. It goes into agility enchants, the Stormshroud leather set and caster clothing. In 1.12.1 it has few sources and almost all of them are in one zone, which is why on the WoW x5 server this reagent holds its price well.

What the item is

Essence of Air has lesser relatives: Elemental Air and Breath of Wind. Both are white reagents. In 1.12.1 you cannot combine several Breaths of Wind into an essence: these items are obtained and spent separately. Breath of Wind is needed, for example, by blacksmiths for the Phantom Blade and the Truesilver Champion.

All reliable sources are air elementals of levels 55 to 63 in Silithus. The numbers come from our server's loot tables.

Crystal Vale: the main farm

In the northwest of Silithus, in the Crystal Vale, there are more than fifty Dust Stormers. They are regular mobs, respawn quickly and drop an essence about 7% of the time. A bonus: each kill gives 5 reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords until you reach Friendly. This reputation matters for Molten Core raiders, so the two farms combine nicely. Huricanian

The rare elemental Huricanian patrols the hill southeast of the vale. The essence chance is low, but each kill gives 25 reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords, up to Honored.

Elemental invasions

During elemental invasions Whirling Invaders and their leader, The Windreaver, appear in the Crystal Vale. The invaders drop essences more often than Dust Stormers. The Windreaver leaves one or two in most kills.

Wind Stones

The Twilight's Hammer cult in Silithus summons air lords at the Wind Stones. A player wearing the Twilight Cultist set can summon them too: a templar at a Lesser Wind Stone, a duke at a regular one and High Marshal Whirlaxis at a Greater Wind Stone. The higher summons need additional cult insignia.

Alchemy transmutes

An alchemist with skill 275 and a Philosopher's Stone can make the essence from water. All transmutes share one cooldown of 1 day.

There are no other transmutes involving air in 1.12.1. If you have spare water and lack air, you can convert the surplus once a day.

Enchanters create the biggest demand: almost every melee fighter and hunter puts agility enchants on weapons and gloves. Recipe lists are in the sections on leatherworking patterns and enchanting formulas.

Where do I get Essence of Air in 1.12.1?

Almost every source is in Silithus: Dust Stormers in the Crystal Vale, the rare elemental Huricanian, plus the elemental invasion mobs and the Twilight's Hammer lords at the Wind Stones. There are practically no other permanent farming spots in 1.12.1.

Where can I get the Transmute Water to Air recipe?

Magnus Frostwake in Caer Darrow (Western Plaguelands) sells Recipe: Transmute Water to Air in limited supply. It requires Alchemy 275 and no reputation.

Can Breath of Wind be turned into Essence of Air?

No. Patch 1.12.1 has no recipe that makes an essence from Breath of Wind. Breath of Wind is a separate reagent for blacksmiths and enchanters.

What can Essence of Air be transmuted into?

Into Essence of Fire, with Transmute Air to Fire. Argent Dawn quartermasters sell the recipe; it requires Honored with the Argent Dawn and Alchemy 275.
