Essence of Earth: where to farm, transmutes and recipes
Essence of Earth is an uncommon (green) elemental reagent of item level 55 and the main "heavy" material of high-level blacksmiths. Below are the drop sources, transmutes and recipes for 1.12.1, verified against the database of the WoW x5 server.

◆Where to farm Essence of Earth
The essence drops from earth, obsidian and lava elementals of level 50 and above. The summary table for all elements is in the elemental reagents reference, and the creatures are described in the earth elementals article.

Silithus and the Burning Steppes
The best solo farm is northwestern Silithus: Desert Rumblers have 28 spawn points, respawn in about 5 minutes and drop Core of Earth (about 5%) as well as the essence. Silithus is also where the Abyssal Council is summoned at the Twilight's Hammer camps: Baron Kazum, the Duke of Shards and the Earthen Templar all drop the essence too.
In the Burning Steppes both kinds of obsidian elementals roam the scorched plains, and the greater ones have almost twice the chance. The essence drops less often than in Silithus, but you can gather fire reagents on the same trip.
In Azshara the elemental invasions bring the elite Avalanchion, escorted by Thundering Invaders; on our server he respawns roughly every day and a half.
Raids
In Molten Core Garr and Golemagg have a 40% chance to add 1-2 essences, while lava elementals and Molten Giants provide the bulk of each clear. In the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj some mobs leave behind Large and Small Obsidian Chunk mining nodes, which give the essence at 10% and 5%.
◆Transmutes: where earth comes from and goes to
Patch 1.12.1 has no "Core of Earth to Essence of Earth" recipe. Earth is created only by alchemy transmutes:
- Transmute: Fire to Earth - recipe sold by Plugger Spazzring in Blackrock Depths; the input is Essence of Fire.
- Transmute: Life to Earth - a very rare world drop recipe; the input is Living Essence.
- Transmute: Earth to Water - recipe from Meilosh at Friendly with Timbermaw Hold; produces Essence of Water.
- Transmute: Earth to Life - also a rare world drop.

Thorium Shield Spike and Heavy Obsidian Belt take 2 essences each, while the leatherworking Volcanic Breastplate and Shoulders take one each together with Essence of Fire. Some obsidian plans require Cenarion Circle reputation, and the Timbermaw items and the Strength enchant require reputation. See the blacksmithing plans catalog for details.
Do not vendor your Cores of Earth: two cores together with two Hearts of Fire and two Globes of Water are needed for the elemental leatherworking quest.

Two: Fire to Earth (recipe sold by Plugger Spazzring in Blackrock Depths) and Life to Earth (rare world drop). Earth can in turn be transmuted into water (recipe from Meilosh at Friendly with the Timbermaw) or into life.
?Can Core of Earth be turned into Essence of Earth?
No, patch 1.12.1 has no such recipe. Core of Earth is used on its own - in leatherworking and in the elemental leatherworking quest.
?Which recipes need Essence of Earth?
Blacksmiths use the most: Stronghold Gauntlets, Hammer of the Titans and Titanic Leggings need 10 each. It is also required for Timbermaw armor, Cenarion Circle obsidian items and the engineering Force Reactive Disk.
