Creation of the Lich King
Frostmourne was forged by Ner'zhul — the spirit of an orc shaman imprisoned by Kil'jaeden in a crystal of ice, who became the Lich King. From the ice of Icecrown he made the blade as a trap: whoever took the sword would gain power, but lose his soul and become a tool of the Scourge.
The fall of Arthas
Prince Arthas Menethil came to Northrend to save his kingdom from the undead. In his desperation he lifted Frostmourne from the ice — and the blade drank his soul. So the noble paladin became a death knight, and then the new Lich King.
The soul-devouring blade
Every victim of Frostmourne feeds the strength of its bearer, and the slain soul may itself be raised as undead. With this very blade Arthas slew his own father, King Terenas, and brought down Lordaeron, turning a flourishing kingdom into a stronghold of the Scourge.
Bond with the Scourge
Frostmourne is the heart of the Lich King's power over the armies of the undead. Through it he commands the Scourge, and his servants, such as Kel'Thuzad, carry their master's will across the world. Vanilla players meet the echoes of this power in Naxxramas.
Place in Vanilla lore
In the age of WoW Classic, Arthas and Frostmourne sit upon the Frozen Throne in Northrend, while his Scourge ravages the Eastern Kingdoms. The Scourge of Naxxramas, floating above Lordaeron, is a direct result of the cursed blade's power.
