Gargoyles — the winged stone terrors of the Scourge
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruGargoyles are the winged stone undead of the Scourge. Unlike the ground-bound ghouls and skeletons, gargoyles own the sky: they scout, pursue and rend the enemy from above.
Do not trust the statues in Scourge citadels. Many of the 'ornaments' on the walls are sleeping gargoyles that wake the moment an intruder draws near.
What a gargoyle is
A gargoyle is a winged stone creature animated by dark magic, with sharp claws and a monstrous face. The Scourge shapes them from obsidian and saturates them with necromancy, gaining a swift flying servant.
Their key trait is the ability to turn to stone. Frozen as a statue, a gargoyle heals its wounds and becomes indistinguishable from an ordinary carving, then suddenly lunges at an unwary foe. This trick makes gargoyles ideal sentries: they can guard the gates of a cursed citadel for years without moving, needing neither rest nor food, and wake only when a stranger appears.
Role in the undead army
In the host of the Lich King gargoyles are the eyes and claws of the sky. They circle above the battlefield seeking the living, finish off the fleeing and tear apart the mages shielded by ground infantry.
This role makes them kin to the winged terrors of the Burning Legion: in both hosts aerial predators break the enemy's formation while the elite press from the ground. Neither walls nor rivers nor rough ground can stop a gargoyle — it simply flies over the obstacle and crashes down on the enemy's rear, sowing panic among those who thought themselves safe.
Gargoyles in WoW Classic
In the Vanilla era stone gargoyles guard Naxxramas and other Scourge strongholds. For a raid they are dangerous for their mobility — hard to reach in the air and easy to lose from sight.
