The Frozen Throne is a block of eternal ice atop the Icecrown glacier, at once the prison and the seat of the Lich King, the heart of the Scourge.

Kil'jaeden's punishment

When the orc shaman Ner'zhul tried to rebel against the Burning Legion, the demon Kil'jaeden punished him: he tore apart his body and sealed his spirit in a block of ice hurled from the sky into Northrend.

Birth of the Lich King

So was born the first Lich King. Imprisoned in the Frozen Throne, Ner'zhul gained power over death and became the mind of the Scourge — the undead army that obeys his will telepathically.

The blade Frostmourne

To find a worthy warrior, the Lich King forged and cast out the cursed runeblade Frostmourne. The blade captured the soul of Arthas, turning a paladin into a death knight.

Command center of the Scourge

From the Frozen Throne the Lich King directs every creature of the Scourge: liches, abominations, banshees and death knights. Should his will falter, the undead lose their unity, as later lore reveals.

Echoes in Vanilla

In the WoW Classic era the Frozen Throne is unreachable, but its power is plain: Kel'Thuzad and Naxxramas are direct instruments of the Lich King who sits upon it.

Why this matters

The Frozen Throne explains the very nature of the Scourge: not a chaotic horde but a single organism ruled by a captive mind deep in Northrend.
