Shaman and leader
Ner'zhul was first a respected elder shaman of the Shadowmoon clan, keeper of the orcs' bond with their ancestral spirits. It was to him that the lying visions of Kil'jaeden first came.
The Legion's deceit
Realizing he had been tricked into the slaughter of the innocent draenei, Ner'zhul recoiled from the Legion. But it was too late: his place was taken by his apprentice Gul'dan, who completed the orcs' corruption.
The Frozen Throne
For his defiance Kil'jaeden punished Ner'zhul more cruelly than any: he tore apart his body and froze the spirit into an icy throne in Northrend, reshaping him into the first Lich King — lord of the undead.
Birth of the Scourge
From his throne Ner'zhul created the Scourge — a plague that turns the dead into slaves. He lured prince Arthas with Frostmourne and raised Kel'Thuzad, laying the ground for the catastrophe of the Third War.
Echoes in Vanilla
In the Vanilla era Ner'zhul's will is felt in every corner of the Scourge: in the floating fortress of Naxxramas, in the Plaguelands and in the necropoli that sow death across Lordaeron.
Why it matters
Ner'zhul is a tragic figure: a victim of deceit turned into its instrument. Understanding his path, you see in the Scourge not faceless evil but a machine with its own captive mind.
