What Nerubians Are
Nerubians are eight-legged sentient beings with the body of a spider and the will of conquerors. Their kingdom of Azjol-Nerub was a web of colossal underground cities with columns, bridges, and halls carved into the permafrost. Nerubians wielded dark magic, poisons, and webbing, and their warriors knew no fear.
Nerubian society was rigid and disciplined. They worshipped no gods of the living and despised outsiders, but their engineering skill was without equal in ancient Azeroth.
The War of the Spider and Enslavement
When the Lich King spread his power, he fell upon Azjol-Nerub. The War of the Spider began — the nerubians fought desperately, for the undead cannot be frightened, and their poisons and traps slowed the Scourge. But through numbers and necromancy the Lich King crushed the kingdom and raised its fallen spiders as undead.
So the crypt fiends were born — risen nerubian warriors who bind their foes in webbing. Their architecture and love of the deep places run through the whole Scourge, including the flying citadel of Naxxramas.
