Orb of Deception: Opposite Faction Disguise in Patch 1.12.1

Section: Lore & bestiary 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 18.10.2026

Orb of Deception is a rare trinket that turns your character into a member of a race of the opposing faction for 5 minutes: a human becomes an orc, a night elf becomes undead. In 1.12.1 this is not a toy from a collection but a real trinket that you must equip to use. On the WoW x5 server the Orb drops as rarely as it did in original Vanilla and is prized as a collector's curiosity.

What the Orb of Deception is and why you want it

The Orb of Deception is one of the few Vanilla transformation items, and arguably the most wanted of all WoW Classic fun items. It has no combat value at all: no armor, no stats. People love it for jokes, roleplay and screenshots; an Alliance character walking through Ironforge as an orc always draws a crowd.

Key properties according to the 1.12 database:

  • quality: rare (blue), item level 59;
  • binds when equipped, so until you put it on it can be sold on the auction house or traded;
  • slot: trinket, requires level 54;
  • the transformation lasts 5 minutes, cooldown 30 minutes;
  • sells to a vendor for 46 silver 18 copper and disenchants into a Large Brilliant Shard.

Which race the Orb turns you into

Vanilla has eight playable races, and each has a fixed counterpart. Read more about the races themselves in races of Azeroth.

GnomeTauren

For Horde characters the pairs work the other way round: an orc looks like a human, a tauren like a gnome and so on. Animations and emotes (dance, jokes, laugh) also come from the new race.

How to get the Orb of Deception

Everlook in Winterspring, the base for farming Winterfall furbolgs that occasionally drop the Orb

  1. Farm the world drop. According to classicdb the Orb drops from a large number of creatures of roughly level 54 to 63, with a chance measured in hundredths of a percent. Sources include furbolgs in Winterspring and Felwood, creatures of the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, as well as dungeon mobs and Ahn'Qiraj.
  2. Thorium Lockboxes. The Orb occasionally appears in a Thorium Lockbox; rogues will find our lockpicking guide useful.
  3. Auction house. As long as it has not been equipped, you can buy the Orb from another player. The price depends on the server economy and is usually high because of its rarity; watch the listings with our auction house guide.

Совет

Farming specifically for the Orb makes no sense, the chance is too low. You are better off doing regular level 55–60 farming in Winterspring (a convenient base is Everlook) and the Plaguelands; the Orb will come as a nice bonus.

Limitations in 1.12.1

  • You must equip it. The Orb takes one of your two trinket slots; in combat it is usually swapped for a combat trinket from our list of best trinkets.
  • Cosmetic only. Your faction, guild and guard reactions do not change: guards of an enemy capital still attack you, and opposing players still see you as an enemy.
  • Changing stance does not cancel the effect; this was fixed back in patch 1.7, long before 1.12.
  • No toy box. In 1.12 the Orb sits in your bag or on your character; it was moved into the toy box only in later expansions.

Tips

  • After transforming, check that the people around you see the new look; the effect is visible to everyone nearby.
  • Do not keep the Orb equipped in a raid: a free trinket slot matters more than a joke.
  • Combine the Orb with Noggenfogger Elixir: a shrunken human disguised as an orc is a screenshot classic.

FAQ

What does the Orb of Deception do in WoW Classic?

It is a trinket: when used, your character looks like a member of a race of the opposing faction for 5 minutes. Cooldown is 30 minutes and the effect is purely cosmetic.

Where does the Orb of Deception drop?

It is a very rare world drop from creatures of roughly level 54 to 63: Winterspring, Felwood, the Plaguelands, Blackrock Spire, Ahn'Qiraj. The chance in the 1.12 database is a fraction of a percent; it can also appear in Thorium Lockboxes.

What race does the Orb of Deception turn me into?

The pairs are fixed: human and orc, dwarf and troll, night elf and undead, gnome and tauren. An Alliance character turns into the matching Horde race and vice versa.

Does the Orb of Deception change my faction?

No. Only your model changes; your faction and how guards and players treat you stay the same.
