Pit lords, also called the annihilan, are giant demons of the Burning Legion that combine monstrous physical might with a commander's mind. They are the warlords of invasions: where the eredar plan the war and the nathrezim weave intrigue, the pit lords lead the demonic armies into battle. The most famous of them is Mannoroth, the curse of the entire orc race.
A pit lord is no mindless brute. The annihilan are fierce and cunning at once, which makes them the Legion's ideal battle commanders.
Who are the pit lords
Annihilan are colossal demons with four arms, a serpentine lower body or mighty legs, tusks and armored hide. They stand taller than a house and wield giant weapons, fire and poison in battle.
Unlike expendable imps, pit lords stand high in the Legion's hierarchy. They command legions of demons, and their appearance on the field means an invasion has entered its decisive phase.
Mannoroth — the curse of the orcs
The greatest of the annihilan is Mannoroth the Destructor. It was his demonic blood that Kil'jaeden, through Gul'dan, gave the orcs to drink, binding a whole people to fel.
Having drunk Mannoroth's blood, the orcs gained monstrous strength and crimson eyes but became slaves of the Legion. This curse hung over the Horde for generations — until Grommash Hellscream broke it, slaying Mannoroth in battle at the cost of his own life.
The annihilan in the Legion's history
Pit lords took part in every major invasion. In the War of the Ancients they led the vanguard of the armies that poured through the Well of Eternity.
Later another renowned annihilan — Magtheridon — seized the Black Temple fortress and ruled the remnants of the demonic forces until he was overthrown. The annihilan are the embodiment of the Legion's raw, unstoppable military might.
