The Highborne drew their power from it, and it became the cause of the greatest catastrophe in Azeroth's history — the Sundering of the world.
The cradle of magic
The first night elves settled on the shores of the Well and began to draw upon its power. Their nobility, the Highborne, delved ever deeper into arcane magic, and that might drew the gaze of Sargeras and the Burning Legion.
The War of the Ancients
Queen Azshara and her counselor Xavius opened a portal above the Well to let Sargeras into the world. Against them rose the heroes of Azeroth — druids, the Dragon Aspects, and the guardians of nature. The War of the Ancients blazed for the very existence of the world.
The Sundering
In a desperate battle the defenders destroyed the portal. The Well, robbed of restraint, imploded with monstrous force. That blast shattered the single continent apart and caused the Sundering of the world — so the present continents of Azeroth appeared, and in the Well's place arose the colossal whirlpool of the Maelstrom.

Echoes in Vanilla lore
From saved vials of the Well's water new shrines were later born: Nordrassil on Hyjal and the Sunwell in Quel'Thalas. So the power of the ancient lake reached the age of WoW Classic, feeding the magic of the elves of the Eastern Kingdoms.
