The cradle of humanity
Thousands of years ago the scattered tribes of humanity united in the Arathi Highlands and founded the empire of Arathor with its capital at Strom. In time the empire spread, its people settling the continent and giving rise to the seven kingdoms. The state that remained on the ancestral land became Stromgarde — keeper of ancient traditions and martial valor.
House Trollbane
Stromgarde was ruled by the stern House Trollbane, whose name speaks of endless war against the trolls of Zul'Aman. King Thoras Trollbane was a living legend of the Second War: he and his old friend Anduin Lothar led the armies of the Alliance against the Horde. From this same line came Danath Trollbane, a celebrated war hero who later marched through the Dark Portal.
Decline and fracture
After the Second War, Stromgarde began to weaken. The murder of King Thoras, the pressure of the Syndicate — the impoverished nobility of fallen Alterac — and an ogre invasion eroded the once-great state. The capital's walls fell and its garrison fractured.

In the Vanilla era the ruins of Stromgarde are one of the most contested spots in the Arathi Highlands. Three forces battle over the city's wreckage: the crown-loyal defenders of the League of Arathor, the bandits of the Syndicate, and the mighty Boulderfist ogres. Nearby lies the famous Arathi Basin battleground, where Horde and Alliance clash.
