A mountain realm
Alterac stretched across the harsh Alterac Mountains, between the Hillsbrad Foothills and Tirisfal Glades. Like the other human kingdoms, it descended from the empire of Arathor. Its small but proud people lived by herding and guarding the mountain passes, ruled by King Aiden Perenolde.
Perenolde's betrayal
During the Second War, as the Alliance fought the Horde for its very survival, King Perenolde feared for his throne. He struck a secret bargain with the orcs, promising to let their armies pass through his lands in exchange for Alterac's safety. The treachery was uncovered, and it stained the kingdom's name forever.
Dissolution of the kingdom
After the war was won, the Alliance did not forgive the betrayal. Perenolde was deposed and the kingdom of Alterac abolished, its lands divided. The disenfranchised nobility did not accept it: the exiles banded together into the Syndicate — an organization of bandits and mercenaries dreaming of restoring their former power at any cost.
Alterac in WoW Classic
In the Vanilla era only the ruins of a castle in the Alterac Mountains and an ill reputation remain of the kingdom. The Syndicate raids caravans in Hillsbrad and the Arathi Highlands. And in the mountains a very different war rages: in Alterac Valley the Stormpike dwarves clash with the Frostwolf orcs — one of the largest battlegrounds in WoW Classic.
