Night elves (kaldorei, "children of the stars") are the most ancient playable people of the Alliance. Their history spans ten thousand years and is bound to magic, nature and the Emerald Dream.
The night elf starting zone is Teldrassil, a colossal World Tree off the shores of Darkshore.
Birth at the Well of Eternity
The kaldorei descend from night-dwelling trolls who settled by the Well of Eternity — a lake of pure magic in ancient Kalimdor. Its power transformed them: they became tall, wise and near-immortal, worshiping the moon goddess Elune.
The War of the Ancients and the Sundering
The obsessed queen Azshara and her "Highborne" nobility abused the Well's magic and drew the gaze of Sargeras. So began the War of the Ancients. The heroes Malfurion Stormrage, Tyrande Whisperwind and Illidan halted the invasion, but at catastrophic cost: destroying the Well caused the Sundering, shattering the single continent.

Druids and the Long Slumber
After the Sundering, Malfurion founded the order of druids, drawing power from the Emerald Dream. Male kaldorei slept for centuries, wandering the dream world, while priestesses of Elune and the Sentinels ruled society. The World Tree Nordrassil granted the people immortality and a deep bond with nature.
Awakening and the Alliance
After ten thousand years of seclusion, the Third War brought the Legion back to Kalimdor. The kaldorei, led by Tyrande and Malfurion, fought alongside humans and orcs. To defeat the demon Archimonde, they sacrificed Nordrassil — and lost their immortality. Opening to the world, the night elves joined the Alliance, though Fandral Staghelm was already growing a new, "unhallowed" tree, Teldrassil.
