Trolls are one of the most ancient peoples of Azeroth and a cunning yet loyal member of the Horde. Behind their savage appearance lies the legacy of mighty empires, the dark magic of voodoo, and an almost supernatural power of regeneration.
Playable trolls belong to the Darkspear tribe and share a starting zone with the orcs — Durotar.
The Ancient Empires
Long before humans, and even before elves, trolls ruled vast lands. Their great empires:

It was from the night-dwelling trolls by the Well of Eternity that the night elves — the trolls' eternal enemies — descended.
Voodoo and the Blood Gods
The trolls' religion is grim voodoo, the worship of blood gods called loa. The most terrible is Hakkar the Soulflayer, whom Gurubashi zealots summon in the depths of Zul'Gurub. Troll priests wield blood magic, and troll flesh can regrow lost limbs.
Decline and Enmity
The troll empires fell to the elves, Arathor and internal strife. Fractured into tribes, the trolls nursed a grudge against all the younger races. Many tribes — Gurubashi, Vilebranch, Sandfury — remain hostile to players to this day.
The Darkspear Tribe and the Horde
The Darkspear tribe chose another path. Exiled from their home islands, they were dying under murlocs and a sea giant when the new Horde sailed past. Thrall saved the tribe, and in gratitude chieftain Sen'jin — and after his death his son Vol'jin — swore loyalty to the Horde. Today the Darkspear's shadow hunters and witch doctors are valued allies of the orcs and tauren.
