History of the high elves (quel'dorei)

◆Split from the night elves

After the War of the Ancients Malfurion banned dangerous arcane magic. Some Highborne, led by Dath'Remar Sunstrider, refused to obey and were exiled from Kalimdor.

◆Founding Quel'Thalas

Crossing the Great Sea, the exiles founded the kingdom of Quel'Thalas in the northeast of the Eastern Kingdoms. From a vial of the Well of Eternity they created the Sunwell, and their capital became Silvermoon.

◆A change of form

Cut off from lunar magic, the elves grew shorter, their skin lightened and their eyes turned blue. Thus the night elves became high elves — a separate people living on the Sunwell's magic.

◆Alliance with humans

In the wars of the past the high elves joined the Alliance of Lordaeron against the orcish Horde. Legendary rangers, including the Windrunner sisters Alleria and Sylvanas, became renowned as peerless archers.

◆Fall in the Third War

In the Third War the Scourge under Arthas invaded Quel'Thalas, killed King Anasterian and defiled the Sunwell. Roughly nine in ten high elves perished.

◆High elves in the Vanilla era

The survivors named themselves the sin'dorei — blood elves. In classic WoW high elves loyal to the Alliance are rare: you meet them in enclaves such as Allerian Stronghold and among the Argent Dawn, eternal foes of the Scourge.
