Iron Grenade in WoW Classic 1.12.1: full reference

Section: Lore & bestiary 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 23.10.2026

Iron Grenade is the first engineering grenade in WoW Classic 1.12.1 with a full 3-second stun: 132–218 Fire damage to every target within 3 yards. It is cheap, learned from a trainer at skill 175 and stays popular in PvP even at level 60. On the WoW x5 server iron and silk pile up quickly, so you can craft grenades by the stack from the middle of the leveling curve.

What the Iron Grenade does

The grenade is thrown at a spot and hits an area. Effect according to the 1.12.1 tooltip:

  • Damage: 132–218 Fire damage to each target within 3 yards.
  • Stun: 3 seconds. Any damage to the target breaks the effect.
  • Cooldown: 1 minute, shared with other engineering explosives.
  • Requirement: Engineering 175. There is no character level requirement — only the profession skill matters.
  • Stack: 10.

How the grenade fits among the other profession devices is covered in the hub of engineering combat gadgets.

How to make the Iron Grenade

  1. Raise Engineering to 175 — the optimal recipe order is in the engineering guide 1–300.
  2. Learn the recipe from an engineering trainer: no separate schematic is needed. According to the server database it is taught, for example, by Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge, Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan.
  3. Gather the reagents and keep a Blacksmith Hammer in your bags.
  4. Crafting takes 8 seconds and the recipe yields 2 grenades.

Engineers make Heavy Blasting Powder themselves from heavy stone, and silk drops from mid-level humanoids. All profession recipes are listed in the engineering schematics reference.

Iron Grenade or Big Iron Bomb

At skill 190 the neighbouring Big Iron Bomb becomes available. Tooltip numbers:

Average damage is almost the same, but the bomb covers a 5-yard radius and works better against a spread-out group, while the grenade is three times cheaper in bars and powder. For mass production and PvP most players pick the grenade. The next step is the Thorium Grenade at 260 with 300–500 damage.

Who should make it and when

  • Engineers at levels 35–50. In this range the grenade is one of the strongest area crowd-control tools available to any class: 3 seconds of stun with no mana or energy cost.
  • Battleground players. In Warsong Gulch the grenade stops the flag carrier and his escort; in Alterac Valley it stops a group on the bridge or at a tower.
  • For skill-ups. The recipe helps raise Engineering around 175, and the result is not wasted — the grenades get used.

Use in PvP and PvE

  • A stun interrupts spellcasting, so it pays to throw the grenade at a healer or caster mid-cast.
  • Do not damage stunned targets if you need time: the first hit breaks the effect.
  • In dungeons the grenade saves the healer when several mobs slip off the tank. Many bosses are immune to stuns.
  • The cooldown is shared with other bombs, so you cannot throw the grenade and Dense Dynamite back to back.
Совет

The Iron Grenade is cheap — practice with it on a battleground before spending thorium on Thorium Grenades. Aimed throwing skill also pays off with the Goblin Land Mine and other devices.

FAQ

Where do I learn the Iron Grenade recipe?

From an engineering trainer at skill 175, no schematic needed. According to the server database it is taught, for example, by Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge, Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan.

What reagents does the Iron Grenade need?

1 Iron Bar, 1 Heavy Blasting Powder and 1 Silk Cloth, plus a Blacksmith Hammer in your bags. The recipe yields 2 grenades.

Iron Grenade or Big Iron Bomb — which is better?

Damage and stun are nearly the same: 132–218 versus 149–201 and 3 seconds each. The bomb hits a 5-yard radius, the grenade 3 yards, but the grenade needs three times fewer bars and powder.

Does damage break the Iron Grenade stun?

Yes. Any damage to a stunned target ends the effect, so do not attack it if you need the full 3 seconds of control.
