◆Founding of Dalaran
When the humans of Arathor learned magic from the high elves, they raised towers in a fertile valley — and so Dalaran was born. To keep wild arcane power from luring demons, the mages founded the Kirin Tor: a council that orders and controls all spellcraft in the city.
Duty and the Danger of Magic
Arcane magic is mighty, but it is a beacon for the Burning Legion. A careless sorcerer may tear a portal straight into the Twisting Nether. So the Kirin Tor strictly regulates what may be studied and what must stay locked away.

◆Antonidas and the Third War
The Kirin Tor's Archmage in the Third War was Antonidas. He uncovered the Cult of the Damned's plot and the plague of undeath, but could not stop the invasion — Dalaran fell to the Scourge and the demon Archimonde. His pupil Jaina Proudmoore led the survivors across the sea.
◆The Kirin Tor in Vanilla
In the Vanilla era Dalaran lies in ruins beneath a magical dome, yet the Kirin Tor is not destroyed: its mages are scattered across Stormwind and other Alliance strongholds, still teaching sorcerers and guarding forbidden tomes.
Knowledge as Weapon and Burden
The Kirin Tor teaches that power without responsibility is ruinous. Magic can open a portal to salvation — or to the abyss. That is why the council keeps forbidden tomes locked away and harshly punishes those who cross the line. The fate of Kel'Thuzad, exiled for dabbling in necromancy, became an eternal lesson for the order. In the Vanilla era this tension lives in every mage: arcane power grants immense might but demands discipline. Portals to the capitals, teleports and polymorph are everyday spells, yet behind them stands the centuries-old school of Dalaran, guarding Azeroth from its own sorcerers' curiosity.
It was an excessive hunger for forbidden magic that doomed the mage Kel'Thuzad: exiled by the Kirin Tor, he went to the Lich King and founded the Cult of the Damned.
